TX - Austin Metcalf - 17 - fatally stabbed at track meet, 2 April 2025

  • #921
On May 10, the family's spokesperson DA (NGAN), requested contributions of $18 to commemorate KA and recognize the double standard...

Today, Karmelo Anthony turns 18.
But this isn’t just a celebration of another year — it’s a moment of reflection on the injustice, double standards, and pain this young Black man has endured far too early in life.
Unbelievable.

NewsNation views video footage of Karmelo Anthony stabbing of Austin Metcalf | NewsNation Now

From the distance recorded (press box across the field), the viewer did not see any altercation between the parties.

We are left to ask: Is this going to be a situation where people/jurors will see what they want to see?

In the CT teen stabbing case I referenced earlier, yesterday, the defendant was found not guilty of the serious charge of 1st degree murder, and the jurors were deadlocked on lesser included charges that were also in the first degree.

I believed from the beginning that CT overcharged the defendant when they failed to take into account his age, the environment--an alcohol fueled party of 50+ underage HS boys, and two co-conspirators who received immunity agreements from prosecution before they ever talked to investigators.

Here, there were also phone videos of the unmatched HS rival fight. IMO, the State was over-confident where CT has no "Stand Your Ground Law," and believed self-defense by the defendant would fail.

It was no surprise to me that the jurors did not buy that the smallest kid in the group intended to kill anybody with a knife handed to him by the party with immunity from prosecution!

2nd degree manslaughter, yes, but not first degree murder-- with a sentence ranging 40-60 years for a 16-year-old offender.

As for KA's Indictment for 1st degree Murder, we have a greater level of confidence that his defense was allowed to provide the Grand Jurors with a packet of information for their consideration (unusual), and an independent panel voted to charge KA with first degree Murder.

OMG, he is creating a victim story for the perpetrator. This of course will not work in court.

I hope you're right, since it seems to be working really well outside of court.

There's a picture in my mind that won't leave -- of Hunter holding his twin in his arms as Austin died.

I didn’t follow all of the Valle trial, but I agree that it was an over-charge.

One difference is Karmelo had the knife in his bag & it sounded like to me, someone gave Valle the knife after he was beat up. Also, parents supplying minors with alcohol, I think is stupid. I think other kids could have been charged, but got immunity. I do feel for the Valle family, seems like no kid and no one held responsible.

The DomAlex wants to make it racial. It’s not clear if it’s just for fund-raising or trial.

In court, the prosecution will READ ALOUD the definition and standard for murder versus self defense.

The jurors will see that (if they had biases beforehand influenced either by the defense's PR campaign or positive or negative public social media positioning on either side) that their job as a jury is to simply follow THE LAW as it stands. When discussions go on in the jury room, those that stray from the law will be reminded by other jury members of what their duty truly is.. Job is not to correct any social injustices from the past...but to interpret and apply the law today on this case.

I have a lot of confidence in juries. They get it right a lot more than they don't. They ignore extraneous BS when they see it. Not always, but the vast majority of the time. I'd guess it is above 90% accuracy...whether to convict or acquit.

If there is solid sworn testimony that the victim threatened the accused's life in any way, that will come out and the outcome will change and I am totally good with that.

Even if Metcalf did threaten Anthony, i.e., "get out of here or I'll kick your butt" or something along those lines, Metcalf was unarmed & incapable in that moment, of any action that would justify the lethal action taken by Anthony.

Any self defense action has to be demonstrated to be comensurate with whatever perceived threat may be imminent. An unarmed kid doesn't meet that level of threat. Not even close.

I am interested in how Texas law "Stand Your Ground" will play into this crime. According to the information "Under such a law, people have no duty to retreat before using deadly force in self-defense, so long as they are in a place where they are lawfully present.[1] The exact details vary by jurisdiction.".

There is NO duty to retreat. And Karmelo Anthony was in a place, he believed he was allowed to be.

I don't think it is right. But that is irrelevant to the law in Texas. It will be an interesting case to watch.

I'm curious what makes you think he was in a place he was allowed to be in?
It wasn't his team, it wasn't his school, it wasn't his tent.
From all I've read, all athletes present know the drill, and that's to stay out of other team's tents.
It's the entire reason Metcalf told him to get lost before Anthony murdered him.

Unless there was specified signs that indicated he was not allowed to be in that area, we can't assume that KA "knew" he was not supposed to be there.

I think it's a perfectly reasonable assumption to make. Athletes stay with their own teams under their own tents. Even when I was in school 40 years ago, we all knew the rules & protocols about staying out of the other team's spaces.

Oh, I agree but I even highly doubt it was raised to that level. MAYBE a shove or push... but your comment is still true. You can't knife someone who just verbally says something or otherwise pushes you.

Bringing the knife in his bag to a track meet, shows malice of forethought. The defense will no doubt spin it that the accused was AFRAID of an attack, so he brought the knife just in case.

But that won't fly with the jury.

This one is pretty straight forward in my humble opinion.

My grandsons run high school and elementary cross country. But never track. The kids and parents often visit other tents at meets. However, I’ve never seen fights.
