GUILTY TX - Bimal Patel, 29, burned alive, Austin, 17 April 2012

The only thing I found about the families, is an article that said neither side had many supporters during the trial.

They better not give her probation! :stormingmad:

Crain: Shriya Patel has been found guilty of arson causing death. It is now yoru duty to assess punishment.

Statesman Courts ‏@AustinCourts 1m
Crain says defense is recommending probation. Shriya is eligible as she has no prior felonies.

I didn't catch what else the judge said?

After that verdict. :tantrum: I'm hoping for prison that was a horrid death(lets be real MURDER) some punishment needs to happen:please:

If they give her prison time, and she gets out on parole - She will then be DEPORTED! :great:

Prosecutor Jim Young now begins his final argument on punishment.

Statesman Courts ‏@AustinCourts 1m
Young: The punishment range in this case is five years in prison to 99 years in prison. You have a huge range to consider.

Statesman Courts ‏@AustinCourts 1m
Young: There will be parole eligibility on this sentence.

Statesman Courts ‏@AustinCourts 1m
Young: Because Patel is here as a wife of US citizen and has been convicted, she will be deported.

Statesman Courts ‏@AustinCourts 50s
Young: So if you give her probation, she will be deported, and she will be walking the streets of India.

Statesman Courts ‏@AustinCourts 56s
Young says this is not a case that merits probation.

Doesn't want to be? She has no one here

Doesn't want to be? She has noons here

:dunno: She doesn't deserve to be in this country. I'd be happy to see her go, and don't let the door hit her in the 🤬🤬🤬 on the way out! :)

I see what you mean though. Prison would really suck for her. Nobody would ever come and visit. Give her the 99 years? I'm not sure. :waitasec: Why should taxpayers in the US pay for her to sit in jail?

But that is what she WANTED. To go back to India and try and get back the guy she slept with before marrying Bimal (she hoped the guy would be jealous).

I do not want her to get what she wants, she took away his options by roasting him alive :steamed:

Defense lawyer Joe James Sawyer now addresses jurors, says it’s true, she will be deported if she gets probation.

Statesman Courts ‏@AustinCourts now
Sawyer: You have heard from Bimal Patel’s friends, they clearly love him, almost revere him...

Statesman Courts ‏@AustinCourts 3s
Sawyer: … but we don’t know anything about what his life was like growing up, what happened to him in the years after college...

Statesman Courts ‏@AustinCourts 26s
Sawyer says we are all two people — that person our friends and family know, and the person we are when we are alone.

Statesman Courts ‏@AustinCourts 25s
Sawyer says that Shriya was a middle-class girl and there are no witnesses as to what happened that night.

Defense is finished!

Because I think she wants to go back

Prosecutor David Levingston now addressing jurors — he says the case is about justice, justice for Bimal Patel.

Statesman Courts ‏@AustinCourts 4s
Levingston: It’s about justice because this woman who sits here before you took that man’s life in the most horrendous way one can imagine.

Statesman Courts ‏@AustinCourts 35s
Levingston asks jurors to come back with a life sentence: We want you to send a message to the community that we believe in justice.

Statesman Courts ‏@AustinCourts 15s
Jurors have begun deliberations in the trial of Shriya Patel, convicted of arson causing death in the April 2012 killing of her husband.

Perhaps a sentence of having to go back and live in a cage in Bimal's families front yard? (With a gas can and lighter within reach of the bars, for her convienence).
Wonder how long she would last there?

Hopefully she'll be in prison long enough so that the guy she killed Bimal over has time to marry and begin his own family, then she can go back knowing she destroyed her own future while doing the same to Bimal. I'm not usually so evil but I'm twerked plenty that they didn't convict on the correct charge.

Thanks for the picture of Bimal posted above, it was good to finally see him.

I just hope and pray they give her some prison time to set an example that you can't commit a crime in the US and get away with it. I am furious!

If we did something in a foreign country you know we would pay a high price! jmo

Bailiff tells me he's ordered food for the jury. Pizza will be here in an hour. So it looks like at least two more hours. #PatelTrial

Looks like another late night of deliberations, hope they have a decision before they leave.

Might be mean on my behalf but hoping for more than a slap on the wrist and deportation.
