“She is devastated," said a Dallas police officer close to Guyger who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly. "She is so, so sorry for this family.”

Guyger had moved into the South Side Flats complex about a month earlier and had never met Jean, the officer said.
...
In other officer-involved shootings, Dallas police have promptly identified the officers involved. But Hall said this situation “is not an officer-involved shooting, this is a shooting involving an off-duty officer.”

Maybe people missed this quote from the Heavy.com article linked:

A photo that circulated widely on social media early on – and which shows Botham Jean with several women – came from Jean’s Instagram account but does not show Amber Guyger.
So, there is a woman who looks just like her photographed with the man whose apartment she mistakenly thought was her own? What a coincidence!

Hall blamed the delay on the Texas Rangers, who she says requested that DPD “hold off” on issuing any warrants for the time being. Part of the delay could be due to confusion over what charge should be brought upon the officer, with a judge reportedly denying DPD’s Friday request for a warrant carrying a manslaughter charge on the grounds that a murder charge would be more appropriate.

While no one is questioning that charges will eventually be filed against the officer, who has per protocol already been placed on administrative leave, the severity of those charges is not yet known. For her part, the officer is reportedly being “cooperative” with investigators, although she is also said to be an “emotional wreck” in the wake of the shooting.

The Cop Who Killed Botham Jean Hasn't Been Arrested Yet?!?!?!

She’s wearing sunglasses in that photo, so it’s hard to say that she looks just like the officer or other young women her age. And the only place that photo was published (NewsOne) IMO does not seem to be MSM (google it). So, for the moment, the quote from The Heavy (used on WS as MSM) is what we have. It may change, of course, but anything else is rumor. I’m not defending what she did, but it’s not accurate at the moment to assume they knew each other.

Point noted. I wasn’t sure if it was msm but when I search, I filter it for news and NewsOne keeps coming up as so... Apologies if I erred. Well, not true - I thought I filtered. So sorry.

I know you meant well. :) I’ve learned to run unusual sources by a mod. The internet is not being kind to this young woman, so if she is NOT the police officer, an innocent person is being accused. And that’s dangerous. We can all just take a deep breath and wait. I’m going to assume there will be transparency, and see what happens.

If you ask me, the woman in the photo with the victim looks nothing like the cop who shot him. Come on. Repeating rumors on social media does no one any good.

I'll give the benefit of the doubt to the cop. Always.

I hope that this does not become a racially charged issue. I don't think anyone can defend this woman. She is a police officer, but this situation had nothing to do with her job.

Either she made a grievous error, or something else was going on. Either way, I have no idea why anyone would go for a weapon immediately, before assessing the situation.

There is something wrong with this story. Unless she states she was being attacked or he had a weapon. Just a man opening a door, does not merit two slugs in the chest, that fast.

I live in Dallas and for the life of me I can't imagine why this officer has not been booked and charged. <modsnip: snipped social media rumor>

Contrary to rumors swirling on social media, Jean did not know the officer, a source with knowledge of the investigation told WFAA. Also, the officer was not one of the people with Jean in a picture that has been circulating on social media, sources said.

Attorney Lee Merritt, who is representing Jean's family, also said that Jean did not know the officer, according to family members.

"We have nothing to substantiate those claims," Merritt told reporters at a press conference Saturday.

While the Dallas Police Department has not officially named the officer, she has been identified as Amber Guyger, a five-year veteran of the force, sources told WFAA.

I don't know, I haven't told my Mom about everyone in my life...so, his family may not be aware that he was involved with AG. Who knows?!

AG won't say anything. And BSJ can't say anything. He sure looks like he was a nice guy.

What is there to know? There is photo circulating on social media of a victim with several women. The woman in the photo is obviously not the cop that shot the victim, which anyone can see if they just look at the photo.
So there is zero evidence of them knowing each other.

Is Texas a "stand your ground" state? Is invoking the so-called castle doctrine a common tactic there?

I wonder if those types of affirmative defenses would be a horrible possibility in this case?

Yes it is. I pray this isn't used in her defense.

What Is The Stand Your Ground Law in Texas?
The "stand your ground" law, also known as the "castle doctrine," is a self-defense law that allows a person to defend themselves or others if there is reason to believe they are in danger. In Texas, criminal defense lawyersexplain this law means that individuals do not have to back down or retreat if they fear bodily harm when threatened in their home, car, or place of work.

The Texas version of the "stand your ground" law does apply beyond just your home to include threatening situations in your car or at your place of employment.

Victim was in his home so he would be the one with no duty to retreat.
