A year after a suburban 4-year-old's gruesome death helped force a state review of child abuse investigations in Houston, there's little else to show that Emma Thompson passed through this world. She's buried next to a grandfather she never met and no formal headstone is placed on her tiny grave, which features a humble funeral home marker and half-dead petunias.

That changes today as prosecutors begin jury selection in the first of two trials to determine how Emma — a sexually abused child found with 80 bruises, a severed pancreas and fractured skull — died on June 27, 2009, and if her mother, registered nurse Abigail Young, 34, failed to prevent the injuries that ultimately killed the preschooler.

It really eats at me that she doesn't have a headstone. Her mother has been out on bail all this time and hasn't even gotten her baby a headstone. Like she didn't even exist. What about other family members? It said Abigail was staying with her mother. Doesn't anybody in this family care about this baby? I don't understand.

I mentioned to a friend that Emma didn't have a headstone and my friend said that perhaps the cemetery has a rule that you have to wait a year after burial to place a headstone? I had never heard of this. Could this be possible?

Prosecutors contend that on the day of the child’s death, Emma was severely battered and unresponsive—and while paramedics tried to save her life, Young did nothing. Prosecuting Attorney Tina Ansari went into graphic detail about Emma’s injuries and told the jury that while she was being treated, Young was talking on her cell phone.

Young is charged with injury to a child by omission—accused of lying to doctors and Child Protective Services investigators about her boyfriend Lucas Coe’s access to the child and ignored signs that Emma was being abused.

ITA, it's a bit of sugar-coating, jmo. However, they both face a possible life sentence. Which isn't really a life sentence here. Maybe this was the charge that the DA thought they could get a solid conviction on.

My head is going to pop right off my body and spin around if the sexual assault charge is not included in this mess. Not to mention a MURDER charge instead of injury to a child.

What can an adult expect the outcome to be when they open up with their fists on a 4 year old? DEATH. Period. No other possible outcome. MURDER, not "injury." How about the STD she had? I mean has biomom had her license pulled yet?

AT the MINIMUM her credentials need to be reviewed if she is espousing a toilet seat as a reasonable explanation of how her 4 year old obtained an STD.

Her mother is only being charged with failure to protect-this woman who asked numerous people including her other children to lie about the presence of the man who was raping her child...a child who she knew was hurt.

What kind of sucess has she had as a medical caregiver I wonder if she fails to recognize that 80 bruises and genital herpes is not the result of leukemia?

I mean, I am asking seriously? She is a wicked person and terribly disturbed. She should spend the rest of her natural life in prison.

Supposedly the egg donor (Perp 1 or P1 henceforth for me) left her precious daughters at home with Perp 2 according to court testimony. P2 called P1 to come home because Emma was ill. P2 met P1 on the sidewalk with Emma in it's arms. P1 took her and immediately put her in the car and drove her to the hospital....well what about the neighbor stating that P1 stated that it cleaned the bathroom with bleach before loading dear Emma into the car and driving for the hospital, rather than calling 911, and talking on the cell phone while the EMT's are trying to revive poor battered Emma????......this stinks to the high heaven.
If I found a genie in a bottle, I would wish to sit on these two juries....my third wish would be to pronounce sentencing in both cases.....:viking:

Sorry to be bitter and cynical. If she is BLESSED enough to be charged with something like failure to protect, she should plead guilty and take her lumps given that she will be allowed to live and have hope of parole. She is living in a dream world if she believes she has a viable defense here.

This "person" (cannot print the real word I want to use) is a NURSE in title only. REAL nurses are not made, they are born. REAL nurses are compassionate and are naturally driven to help others, not hurt others.
I knew I wanted to be a nurse from the time I could "think". Its my identity, its part of who I am. Its in everything I do, and think, Its my personality, its my identity. I could no more harm a child, or anyone else, than I could hurt one of my own family members. Its not in a REAL nurse to harm anyone. REAL nurses come to the aid of anyone who needs it. The term "gifted Nurse" should be reserved for only the truly compassionate nurses who demonstrate over time that they have nothing but a patients best interest, dignity and healing in mind. Melanie McGwire was also considered a "gifted" nurse. She killed her husband and dismantled his body and dumped him in 3 suitcases into the potomac river. Gifted Nurse,? I think not! I think this title of "gifted" is handed out way too recklessly anymore. I have known nurses who are truly "gifted". Just like "anyone" can be a mother, only a loving mother can be a "mom", anyone can go to nursing school, pass boards and get a job. But only Nurses who are BORN TO BE A NURSE are true "Nurses".
Those reading this that are Nurses will know what I am talking about. Its not a profession, its who you ARE.

Agreed Abbie-I dont know how gifted you can be if you claim your daughter's entrenched case of herpes was caused by sharing a toilet seat with your non existent boyfriend. When the same child shows signs of having been raped and had the stuffing stomped out of her, you opt to DRIVE the child to the hospital (eventually) rather than calling 911 and having her revived.

Sounds like a woman who lives by the principal of CYA. I hope and pray the hospital is reviewing patient care records from her watch.
