When she got engaged against her will at 14, Safinaz Aria’s life was no longer her own. The 28-year-old Houston mother said the physical and sexual abuse started early in her marriage to Ahmad Aria, an older businessman in Afghanistan. Now Aria’s own 14-year-old daughter is in the hands of the same man, along with the couple’s two other children. Her husband, who lives in Miami, won custody of the three kids through a court order, despite years of being absent from their family. From her new home in Houston, she’s navigating a completely foreign family law system in a fight to get them back — but the odds are stacked against her.

The fact that they live in two different states is a problem. Sounds like the hearings are in Florida and she lives in Texas. And the kids had previously established residency in Florida, according to the article linked above. Obviously, too, there is no evidence of abuse from Afghanistan since I doubt that DV is considered a police matter over there. Poor lady.
