TX TX-Hunt, Overnight flooding at Camp Mystic, all girls camp. Unknown number of missing. July 4, 2025

I can understand someone not knowing the risk if they're from out of town, but anyone from the area, especially a camp owner, has no excuse. Floods are so common. I was in a flood in the 90's at another campground on the Guadalupe. We lost all our possessions and a pickup. Some locals helped us out and gave us dry clothes and a ride. It's a very common story.

This flood event was obviously so much worse, all factors had to line up exactly to produce it. There were mere minutes once the river started rising to get everyone out. All property owners/managers should have been on high alert all night guiding their charges to safety. There were plenty of warnings. There is simply no excuse.

Two young sisters killed in the catastrophic Texas floods sent their parents a heartbreaking 'I love you' text before they drowned.

Blair, 13, and Brooke Harber, 11, were found dead with their 'hands locked together' after the Guadalupe River rose to record heights over the weekend, completely flooding the camping area where they were staying with their family.

At least 82 people were killed in the devastation along the Guadalupe River, outside of San Antonio, and 41 remain missing.

Unbelievable how the flooding could have been this bad in this day in age. Usually they build dams and have other safety precautions to make sure catostraphic flooding like this never occurs. The pictures they are showing look like the area was struck by a tornado or hurricane.

“I had about 200 kids — scared, cold, and terrified. Probably the worst day of their lives.”Coast Guard rescue swimmer Scott Ruskin shares how he helped save 165 people during the devastating Texas floods at Camp Mystic.

Horribly sad, but I leave it up to the people of Texas to decide on their representatives.

However, I am positive that every summer the students at A&M University are looking for internships. It is a major IT University in Texas. Why not ask students to develop prototypes for warning systems, rather than wait till representatives find the money, decide who the contracts go to, etc, etc.

Best businesses in this world have been started by students. (Some even, because the project got a “C” and they were told, “it won’t work”.)

Well, I live in Texas. Due to gerrymandering, what I personally want or think doesn’t matter to the politicians who represent me at the state or national level.

Nonetheless, I agree that our university students could design an alert system. The tricky part would be to pay for and implement the systems. People are reluctant to spend money on public projects here, and businesses have to make a profit.

Finally, 95% of land is privately owned here, including the land surrounding the Guadalupe River. Implementing alert systems would require the cooperation of private landowners and businesses.
Agreed with both posts. ^^^
Excellent points.

I live in an area where flash floods sweep people away every year. We have a lot of bad weather here with tornadoes, but flash floods are what scare me the most.

😭😭 I need to stop reading these stories, they are too heartbreaking.

Follow the money…or the lack thereof.

According to the excellent Texas Tribune’s article, Texas lawmakers failed to pass a bill to improve local disaster warning systems this year:

Even local communities balked at the great expense of a siren system:

But don’t worry, the state will take care of it, eventually:

Forget striking while the iron is hot to improve and pass House Bill 13, or to rally support for local funding—let’s just wait till the iron is nice and cool so we don’t have to pay a dang penny.
Red and purple emphasis mine.
I think the bolded is important to consider !
However, maybe now opinions will shift ?
Omo.

Flash floods can overflow dams and cause them to collapse.

LEVEES CAN AND DO FAIL OFTEN WITH CATASTROPHIC CONSEQUENCES

"Ordinarily," he says, "this is a beautiful place, an idyllic place."

"My mom was a counselor there, but also so many of my friends were raised at this camp. "

The lemonade stand kids raised over five grand.

I understand the neatness of compiling the names into one post, but the original posts had the links to MSM sources. In a mass casualty event when names of both the dead and the missing are floating around the media, it's kind of important to keep those sources linked. There's at least one person, for example, who was reported early as amongst the deceased, but it was a misidentification. The original article was changed to reflect that he is still missing, but the ripples out into other msm articles haven't been corrected. I have made sure that person has not been added to the list, and they won't be by me until they are found and correctly identified. If a name ends up listed here without a source, it's going to be very difficult to find where it came from. Some names have been widely reported and repeated, but others have only been mentioned in one article or in a tiny section on a single MSM site's liveblog. Keeping the source matters when things are changing quickly and misinformation can become 'fact' through repetition.

I agree with this. I can think of at least two people where early reports were wrong (one who was identified as dead, but it was a false ID, and one who was reported to have been found alive, but turned out to be dead). I will try to go through and copy the neat list and make each name into a hyperlink to the source so it's both easily readable and clearly sourced this afternoon, unless someone else gets to it first.

Are all these confirmed victims? Do you have a link?

Brilliant. I'm in Australia and I just climbed into bed, so if you're awake and eager, have at it, but if not then I'll get to it in the morning. I don't mind doing it if you aren't able to get to it, I'd been thinking myself of making one list but I'm too tired to do it tonight. I just wanted José Olvera on the thread because I hadn't seen him reported anywhere else, just in that tiny live feed stub I found just as I was coming to bed. That's why I bothered to update just for him. I worried I'd lose track of him if I waited till morning. I've got a dozen different msm liveblog feeds open for this crisis in separate tabs and some auto refresh whether I like it or not.

They've just taken the names from mine and teeby's previous posts, all of which have msm links.

We're going to make a full list with links included.

Teeby's on it, and if they don't get to it, I will tomorrow.

Mark Walker, 52, Sara Walker, 50, and their son Johnny Walker, 14 from Kentfield, in Marin County, CA, are missing. They were staying at a house in Hunt, TX while their daughter Ellie, 16, was attending a camp. Ellie was rescued.

I edited it myself to include labels
I appreciate the labeled map. Cross referencing it to the flood plains map on FEMA Flood Map Service Center | Search By Address, nearly the whole camp is in flood plains. It's unfathomable to me that it was allowed to be built. One more thing to check before sending my kids anywhere.
