Jeffrey Clay Lasiter ended up pleading guilty to the murder in 2007 and was sentenced to life in prison. He appealed the ruling a couple of years later and it was denied.

A judge determining punishment for a man who admitting killing a college student sent him to prison for life on Wednesday, saying her decision was the safest for the community.

Defense attorneys for Jeffrey Clay Lasiter argued that he suffered from a mental illness that caused him to have delusions, and those delusions triggered him to shoot Kasey Davis, a Texas Christian University football player who was home on a holiday break in January 2006.

After three days of testimony, she determined Lasiter acted with malice, and gave him the maximum sentence for murder, a first-degree felony.

Lasiter, 42, pleaded guilty on Monday to murder, admitting he shot Davis in the parking lot of a Conroe apartment complex. He decided to let the judge determine his punishment.

Davis' mother, Judy Cantrell, said she doesn't believe Lasiter has a mental illness.

''He really tried to fake his way through this," Cantrell said after the trial. "It was an act to get a lesser sentence."

The appeals decision has more details of Kasey's murder.
