Search for missing woman last seen in northeast Houston underway

Leslie Obi, 43, was last seen Wednesday in southwest Houston. Updated information shows Obi may actually be on the northeast side.

HOUSTON — A search is underway for a missing 43-year-old woman who was last seen on Jan. 11 in southwest Houston.

Texas EquuSearch said Leslie Obi was last seen Wednesday near Charleston Park Drive, which is along U.S. Highway 90 Alternate and West Bellfort Avenue.
But according to officials, the latest information has her last known location near an apartment complex on Ley Road, which is near the Trinity Gardens neighborhood in northeast Houston.

Officials didn't say what Obi was wearing at the time of her disappearance.

Obi's family members are desperate for answers and Texas EquuSearch spent most of Sunday searching on foot and on ATVs.

The circumstances surrounding her disappearance are unclear but Texas EquuSearch founder Tim Miller said Obi has no car and her phone is going straight to voicemail.

According to Miller, Obi didn't pick up her check from the company at which she works.

Family members say Obi's phone goes to voicemail, and it is not like her to disappear for days without calling someone to let them know she is OK.

Right now, police do not suspect foul play in her disappearance, but her family has seen something like this before. In 2001, her cousin Larry Guillory went missing and he was later found dead.

Obi's disappearance is bringing back a lot of bad memories.

"It hits home because it's déj vu of it happening yet again, and we are all here again, as a family. We are all trying to locate yet another cousin," Dominique Guillory, cousin, said.

It has been six days and counting since 43-year-old Leslie Obi disappeared. Homicide detectives searched an area on Monday seven miles away from where she was last seen.

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Houston Police Department homicide detectives gathering at an apartment complex on the city's southeast side on Tuesday were brought there as part of the ongoing search for a 43-year-old woman who was last seen alive six days ago.

Houston police confirm they are questioning one person in connection with the case, but they still don't have any evidence that leads them to believe foul play was a factor in Obi's disappearance.

In the latest development in the case, HPD Homicide Division detectives began investigating an apartment complex at 9425 Scott St., which is about seven miles away from where she was last seen. HPD said her body hasn't been found, but detectives confirmed investigating the location as part of the case.

While police could not say what took place on Scott Street, SkyEye flew over the area and captured a person in handcuffs being transferred from one patrol car to another.

Investigators were at the Sunnyside complex and they blocked off a parking lot. Authorities were seen at a unit on the second floor. It's unclear what investigators found but they did say it was connected to Obi's disappearance.

Very sad. My prayers are with her and her family. Ms Obi didn't have a car yet the search is approx 7 miles away. With LE saying they are questioning someone is hopeful that answers will come soon for her family. IMO

Campbell was previously out on parole for a murder that he was convicted of in 1986. In that killing, the victim’s body was also discarded, police said.

Her cause of death was listed as “sharp force neck trauma,” according to records.

On May 13, James Campbell pleaded guilty to tampering/fabricating physical evidence in connection with 43-year-old Leslie Obi's death.

ABC13 spoke to Campbell in January 2023 at his apartment on Scott Street, which is about seven miles away from where Obi was last seen.

Campbell told ABC13 he knew Obi from his first job and admitted to helping another man, who he claims killed Obi, move her body out of his apartment and clean up.

Family members reported Obi missing on Jan. 12, 2023. She was last seen around 8 a.m. on Jan. 11 near Charleston Park Drive and Highway 90 in southwest Houston.

Further investigation indicated that Obi was killed inside Campbell's apartment on Scott Street, according to police. Investigators said he tampered with Obi's body following her death and had it discarded.
