I would agree in a case where there's some doubt the mother is telling the truth. With the FBI now being involved, it seems highly likely they've got enough corroborating witnesses that a tiny detail misspoken in the translation won't matter.

They can get essential information; does the family have any thoughts on who might have done this, has anyone seen a person lurking around recently, what time was the child last seen and where, etc.

There is more to interpretation than the mechanical translation of a language. Sometimes little differences are big differences.

The proposed question in bold may not always yield mechanical yes / no answers. Rather, there could be hesitancies. slang and caveats as they might be reluctant to name say uncle "U" directly.

In short, an interpreter familiar with stress answers and who is not only native, but familiar with slang etc. of the family's socio economic status will only help the investigation.

As a side note, several forum members fluent in Spanish once translated a note written in bad Spanish. I was familiar with the Mexican slang term 'Compuso' (broke / busted / "messed up") that other members had not heard of.

But.... I incorrectly translated one portion to mean: "I knew somebody with a certain name" (stated name was rare) Another forum member correctly translated it: "I wanted to go "Rambo" "- a very different meaning.

Arguably, we were both "right". But she knew the spirit of what was written. I just knew mechanically what was written in that portion. In this case, there was a big difference.

If the family speaks Dari / Tajik / Farsi from rural Afghanistan, and the police get a Iranian from Tehran as a translator, alot could be missed.

Very, very well said.

I think the ideal interpreter for both the parents and other people would be somebody who interpreted for the military in field situation.

Such an interpreter would more likely be able to note and inform detectives of pregnant pauses, answers with real or implied caveats (If that were true, then "X" ", requests for the questions to be repeated etc.
In az at least for medical appointments etc an outside interperter is required, it cannot be a family member....

It seems that cases of kids who go missing from apartment complexes are often solved relatively quickly.

Hindsight is 20/20 , not being in the moment we can only assume what we would do....

Right, and I said as much in one of my other posts.

It's hard to know what might be fuzzy due to language barriers or if some of the details actually aren't super clear regardless.

Fuzzy language is often an issue without a language barrier

Unless I missed something, there is nothing that indicates the mother didnt follow Lina on the same path. For all we know there are twists and turns that would have kept her out of her mother's line of sight. Plus if there is more than one route to the apt from that path, she could only guess which way Lina went. I can imagine the mom took the shortest route to the apt and when she didnt find Lina there she came back out and started searching.

Afghani language interpreters in San Antonio are usually military trained. That is why we have them here. "Military City -USA"
I'm sure the interpreter who SAPD obtained was military trained and not some dude living at the apartment complex.

I'm only asking why she went to the apartment instead of following her down the path.

I assume Lina's mother lost sight of her on the path, which can happen in seconds, so she went where she thought Lina most likely went.

I hope Lina's family is surrounded by support, love, and every help they need.

This is why I wish we knew which apartment or at least which building they lived in. If Lina walked down the path they always take to and from the play area, this might be the reason Mom thought she was heading home and was not alarmed at first. Was someone else at the home? Did Mom have the 2 year old with her at the playground and had to gather her up before she went off to check on Lina. If she looked up, saw Lina heading away, turned to retrieve the 2 year old, who may have been playing, it may have been a couple of minutes before she could head home to check on Lina. Unfortunately, that’s all it takes…
I was wondering if she had the two year old with her. That hasn't been mentioned I don't believe. In fact I haven't seen the other child mentioned at all since the interview.

Looking through the photos of the apartment complex, it sure seems likely someone saw something. JMO

San Antonio Police Chief William McManus says authorities are combing through dozens of videos to piece together what happened to Lina Khil on Monday evening. I just got off the phone with the department who told me that, at this time, they're not releasing any of that video.

Well said. I forgot about San Antonio's military connection.

I imagine that if one has a very quick preference for a military trained interpreter in any Afghan language, San Antonio is the place to be.

According to news reports, mom saw Lena heading down the path but mom went to the apartment instead because that's where she thought Lena was going. I'm only asking why she went to the apartment instead of following her down the path. Goodness.
I am thinking they maybe took multiple paths, maybe more than one led home and mom thought her way was quicker. JMHO

Pamela Allen said a quick resolution is all Lina's family wants right now. The non-profit leader spoke with them Wednesday afternoon and said they're distraught.

“They're just, they're so overwhelmed by just what's going on the fact that they can't find their baby. It's a bit much for them,” Allen said.

She adds the playground where Lina was last seen is about 40 feet from her family's front door. Allen said the family was unaware how many people want to help so through a translator, she asked them this.

“I asked them, would you allow us to pray? And their response was, yes, yes. And it was just immediate,” Allen said.

An immediate response from a family who wants their daughter home.

“Everybody's just kind of holding their breath on this one and hoping that this baby's going to be okay,” Allen said.

There will be an interfaith prayer vigil for Lina’s safe return Friday morning at 10:00. It will be at 9400 Fredericksburg Road.

'This is a tragedy': reward money and prayer vigil planned for missing three-year-old

Caveat: The article does not reference who Pamela Allen is, (WOAI does this from time-to-time ) but she might run a families in crisis non-profit: Eagles Flight Advocacy and Outreach. I am not reading too much into this translation.

I can not imagine how terrified Lina's parents must be. I am glad to see there is a lot of support within their community and the greater SA area. Who knows what awful circumstances they fled, and this happens. Heartbreaking.

Didn't one news station report that her mom is pregnant? That could explain why she thought Lina took a different path back to their apt and just thought she'd be there. Maybe her mum was making a mad dash for the loo and thought, okay, Lina is ahead of me and will be at the apt waiting, and I've got to go now, as happened to me when I was pregnant. She may have had the younger sister in tow, as well. Small, everyday distractions that every parent has.

It only takes a predator seconds, as we know.

So very true... It can happen in the blink of an eye. Nobody can have eyes on someone else all 86,400 seconds in a day... It's impossible.

Poor family having to go through this with all they’ve already had to endure before moving here. We need a Christmas miracle. I honestly believe it can be done. Prayers continue… Please let her be safe
