My question about little #MaleahDavis, still missing: was CPS or her court appointed guardian that signed off on the little girl being returned to her immediate family? Did they do a thorough assessment or was she just a number in the system?

Missing #MaleahDavis had already been removed by CPS. Yet, the judge, her guardian, and/or CPS thought she was fine to go back home. Were adults paying attention? Or was she just a number? #txlege

Maleah Davis' stepdad changed story while reporting her missing: Police
[...]

According to police, Darion Vence showed up at Sugar Land Methodist Hospital on Saturday night, where an off-duty officer noticed fresh wounds on him. Vence claimed to be the victim of a roadside attack by three Hispanic suspects the day before while on his way to pick up the girl's mother from Bush Intercontinental Airport.

Police also initially stated Vence was with Maleah and his 1-year-old son when he was left unconscious. He stated that he regained consciousness late Saturday afternoon on the side of Highway 6 near First Colony Mall. His son was with him but Maleah was not.

Vence's son is in the care of a relative while authorities and Texas EquuSearch combed the surrounding area for the missing girl.

Search for missing girl suspended indefinitely due to weather
Authorities have suspended the search for missing 4-year-old Maleah Davis after parts of Texas were inundated with heavy rains and flooding.

A group that was helping with the search said it would be suspended until further notice.

"Some of the areas are now filled with deep rain water, and this would greatly limit our searchers and accessibility," the group said.

Maleah Davis' stepfather changed his story 'multiple times', police say | Daily Mail Online
Derion Vence, 26, walked into a Houston, Texas, hospital on Saturday night with his unharmed one-year-old son, claiming that they had spent the previous 24 hours being held captive by Hispanic men who took Maleah.

He had visible injuries and officers say 'something clearly happened to him' but details of his story about how Maleah was snatched did not make sense, according to the police department which was first on the scene.

'During our initial interview that he provided, his story changed several times, some of what he described didn't add up,' Doug Adolph, the spokesman for the Sugar Land Police Department, told DailyMail.com on Wednesday.

Why did missing 4-year-old Maleah Davis need brain surgery?
[...]

KHOU 11 Investigates spent the last few days going through court records and discovered the answer -- and although the information reveals some family issues and allegations of abuse, it's not being shared to point a finger at one person or to try to influence public opinion.

[...]

The state got involved after a seizure and head injury sent Maleah to the hospital in August.

Maleah was living with her grandmother, mother Brittany Bowens, and Bowens’ boyfriend, Derion Vence, and only went to the hospital at the urging of her grandmother, who was at work at the time of Maleah's injury, according to court records.

[...]

Doctors had to perform a “craniectomy to relieve pressure” and remove half of her skull, according to documents. When Maleah got out of ICU, doctors ordered that she wear a helmet for 12-24 months while she healed. Doctors said the injury and explanation did not add up and suspected abuse, according to court records.

This was not Maleah's first trip to the emergency room.

[...]

Bowens said Maleah was hurt after falling from a chair, but that “would not have caused the serious internal injuries, which required half of Maleah’s skull to be removed,” medical professionals said in court documents.

“Maleah Davis suffered traumatic brain injury with evidence of more than one injury while in the possession of her mother Brittany Bowens and the mother’s paramour, Derion Vence,” court records read. “Neither caregiver had an explanation that was consistent with the injury.”

The case worker with CPS eventually concluded there was “reason to believe” there was “neglectful supervision” on Bowens’ part, but nothing more. In the end, “the doctor could not confirm whether or not injuries were caused by abuse,” court records read.

Doctors said the injury and explanation did not add up and suspected abuse, according to court records.

This was not Maleah's first trip to the emergency room.

According to records, three weeks earlier, on July 10, Bowens took Maleah to the ER after she was throwing up blood. Doctors reported Maleah was "extremely lethargic." Maleah was treated and sent home.

The following week, on July 28, Maleah was back in the hospital for a cut to her forehead. Later, medical professionals reported she had blood just outside her brain, which could be life threatening.

The caseworker with CPS eventually concluded there was “reason to believe” there was “neglectful supervision” on Bowens’ part, but nothing more. In the end, “the doctor could not confirm whether or not injuries were caused by abuse,” court records read.

CPS has had temporary custody of Maleah since August. But a judge in February ordered a “monitored return” home to Bowens, where “the caseworker could go at least once a month to check on the family,” according to CPS spokeswoman Tiffani Butler.

The group’s founder, Tim Miller, kept on searching Wednesday. He flew over the Brazos River on Wednesday morning by helicopter to see if he could locate Maleah’s family’s missing car. Miller said the aerial search didn’t show anything.

A different group, consisting of Maleah’s mother and volunteers, handed out 700 flyers Wednesday morning in the area of the family’s Southwest Houston apartment.

“We gotta bring her home, we gotta keep on advocating,” said JM with Houston’s Unsolved Homicides. “We gotta pass out flyers, spread on social media that we’re gonna find her.

The group plans to hand out more flyers around 10:30 a.m. Thursday, near Beltway 8 and Bissonnet Street.

Search for Maleah Davis called off 'until further notice' because of weather
[...]

The search halt comes as a Harris County judge approved a gag order on a civil suit involving the Maleah’s parents, a source with knowledge of the case said Wednesday. The order was approved to prohibit the lawyers representing Maleah’s biological parents, BB and CD, from talking about a case that began in May 2016 as a child support dispute, court records show.

The case was concluded that summer but records also show the suit resumed in August 2018 after Maleah suffered a head injury in August 2018 that was reported to Child Protective Services as “possible physical abuse.” The report prompted caseworkers to obtain custody of the girl and her two siblings, a then 5-year-old and 1-year-old boy, and place them in the care of a family member, a CPS spokeswoman recently said.

[...]

The involvement of CPS prompted attorney JW to be appointed as Maleah’s guardian ad litem, according to records. JW and two other lawyers involved in the case, GC and WC, could not be reached for comment.

The next court date is May 22.

Maleah's mother asks public for help in search for missing 4-year-old
[...]

“We need more volunteers—please,” said Maleah's mom BB in an exclusive interview with Fox 26 Wednesday.

BB is asking anyone reading the news to join her Thursday to help search and spread the word about Maleah.

“We’re gonna be passing out flyers on Beltway 8 and Bissonnet at the McDonald’s," said BB. "Please come out and support and help us find Maleah. We’ll be meeting between 10:30 and 11 a.m. Please be there. We need you. Please.”

Houston Police were seen revisiting Maleah’s apartment complex Wednesday where neighbors remain baffled.

[...]

Texas Equusearch called off Wednesday's ground search efforts, citing flooding in the areas they had planned to look. They searched by air instead, riding a helicopter low along the Brazos River, all the way from the Gulf of Mexico to Hwy 59, according to Texas Equusearch founder Tim Miller. He told Fox 26 rode the chopper looking for any sign of the missing silver Nissan or Maleah. He said volunteers plan to resume the ground search on Thursday.
