Kaitlin Armstrong, 34, is back in Austin to face charges at the Travis County Jail. She was arrested last week in Costa Rica for the murder of pro-cyclist Moriah Wilson, 25.

But would a bailbonds company have to finance that for her? She's a huge flight risk. She could take off and leave the bond company holding the bag. Who'd want to do that?
So, this might be more problematic than a matter of meeting a 10% sum.

I agree. I think bond at this level is not just that you pass the hat around your friends, come up with 10% and bam, you're out. There's much more to it, such as the court requiring you have surety from someone who actually has $350 million in assets.

You would think, but then I had read that in Harris County at least, in March the Harris County Bail Bond Board rejected a proposal which would require bond companies to collect a minimum 10% of a defendant's bond.

In regards to the ongoing battle with bail bonds, Harris County has made a decision with low posting bonds.

They do indeed still have a huge expat community and it is fairly safe if you are not out drunk on the beach at night...theft is the biggest issue with it being a poor country. I lived there for a couple of years to surf. My friend is just finishing up a house there in fact. Her money would have gone much further than Costa Rica and there are tons of yoga places to work in there. Plenty of easy hustles you can do to make money also. The police are notoriously corrupt, so they sure won't be bothering to report you. When the civil uprising happened in 2016ish, it was more dangerous, things have cooled down and are back to status quo with Ortega.

Thanks for this. I lived in Nicaragua (Granada) for some time and am sometimes surprised at how wrong people get the place. Until the uprising in 2018-19, it was actually the safest country in Central America, and it probably is again at this point. Unfortunately a large part of the reason is that Ortega's authoritarian rule has kept it out of the drug trafficking that many of the other countries face. Gorgeous country with amazing people, and quite safe most everywhere other than parts of Managua. Very few guns. Petty crime/theft is the issue there.

Would have been a good spot for her, and her money would go a lot further than in CR.

Can someone give me an idiot proof run down on how bond works? We don't have it in the UK.

Does she have to provide the 10% upfront if she wants to be released on bond? Or does she have to show that she has it in assets and a company pays the bond for her?

That’s what I thought. She’s still cute without make up, but I wanted to find a photo where she’s more natural so we could get a better idea of how her appearance changed after surgery.
