The media is checking into Johnson's SM activity. According to what's being reported (piles of salt are in order), he identified as a black nationalist. Think Black Panthers, or an apparent reincarnation of same. He also "liked" a black militant group calling for the killing of "anyone in blue."

I bet he didn't support BLM, actually. Peaceful protests versus armed aggression.

How do people this young (think Dylan Roof also) come to hate another group so much? what a waste of lives. If you do not agree with something to this extent, pick yourself up and do something positive about it, not add to what it is you proclaim to hate.

If there was another race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, etc, that I hated this much, I promise you I could live my life and practically never interact with them again.

Now this one, and eventually the other one, will meet their maker and have to answer for what they have done. I hope just for clarity, St Peter, or who ever they meet, will have the color of skin that they hate so much.

No one on here is saying "blacks are
Killing our police"

Most are saying police put their lives on the line every day.

"Criminals kill police".

It's posts like this that continue to drive a wedge between people. To create discord instead of the healing dialogue we so desperately need. Isn't it time to stop this "black vs white" bull crap?

IMO no. We have to look at it and examine it and ourselves before we can put it behind us. And it's important to know the facts. Facts don't create the discord - they only expose it.

Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings and Police Chief David Brown made clear on Friday that the fatal shooting of five law enforcement officers during a downtown rally will not silence future demonstrations in the city.

But both signaled that future protest participants may see additional safeguards.

"From a policy standpoint, we believe in the right to protest peacefully, and these were peaceful protests until this happened," Rawlings said at a news conference the morning after Thursday night's sniper attack. "But we also have to believe in keeping our police officers safe. And I know I'm going to redouble my efforts on that."

Brown, whose department lost four of the five officers killed in the downtown shooting, insisted that freedom of expression is a tenet held dear by all, including police.

"Police officers are guardians of this great democracy," Brown said. "We won't militarize our policing standards. But we will do it in a much safer way every time."

My first instinct was I hope BLM steps back and takes a break for a couple of days because (bbm) guessing too, it would further polarize. But OTOH, everyone saw how Dallas LE threw themselves in the line of fire to protect a peaceful protest, its citizens of Dallas, and they were just gunned down... I think the next few days are critical to see which way things will go. The strength of the other peaceful protests around the country last night may provide an important bridge of understanding.

One problem is that there isn't a a single organization called BLM per se. It is a genuine grassroots movement, a label for loosely affiliated groups of people across the country who have explicitly rejected a top down organization, or "leaders" they think can be co-opted.

Well said bluesneakers, well said.

Agreed. The "righteous us/evil them" dynamic needs to be torn down.

Micah X. Johnson was military trained.

Yes he was, but his attack did take a certain level of skill, should not be considered like he was an expert sniper. In the eighth and ninth grade, I got my sharpshooter and was working on my bars 1-9 of sharpshooter. The officers were like sitting ducks, this guy took a page out of history with using El Centro like the Book depository...the sixth floor.

I know BLM can't control who supports them and fights for there cause but IMO they are a hate group. Listen to some of their chants and actions at some rallies. They have chapters all over the country, take a look at the leaders of those chapters and read their social medias.

Anyone can do anything and say they're part of BLM. It's not like you need a membership card.

Some of the supporters/protesters are advocating violence. The founders disavow violence though. Unfortunately, it's getting co-opted by nuts.

IMO, one probable answer to that is --mental illness.

For example....ISIS recruiters have stated explicitly they target those they see are isolated socially and borderline mentally ill, believing them most receptive. This thinking originated with the ex-Baathist leaders in ISIS who once served as military psych-op experts for Saddam Hussein.

yes, the target the most vulnerable. I absolutely agree. Those that are seeking family, acceptance a purpose in life, are prone to joining cults, and becoming radicalized.

Are you serious? That is your big concern? Wow...petty enough, in my opinion...

Petty doesn't even come close to what I'm thinking.

My view of the majority of the people who turn up for marches for Black Lives Matter are men and women who choose to express themselves
at peaceful marches.

Last night the evil-minded person(s) not only took away lives of police officers who were making it possible for the protesters to march safely, but
also aimed hatred at people who want to protest peacefully.

Praying for peace and hope in Dallas today. Praying for people to come together in compassion.

You are so right, and both sides need to tear that down. No one group is perfect, no one is all bad. Don't blame me for every problem you've ever had, and I won't ask you to fix every problem I cause for myself.

"It is important to allow people to grieve first and foremost," said the Rev. Dr. Jeff Hood, one of the event's organizers. "Then we want to create a space for anger and rage so people can get that out."

Troubling phrase. How do you create a "space" for anger and rage and do it peacefully so no lives or property are damaged ?
Imo; no one has a right to destroy anything. I don't care how mad you are.

Witness tells @dallasnews photog he heard at least 20-30 gunshots, "it looked like four cops were on the ground." https://twitter.com/gjmccarthy

I worry that giving people a space for anger and rage leads to more violence and deeper seeds of hatred.
