TX - No acccess for young wheelchair user's graduation, plus they forgot her

And many gifted children also have learning differences or disabilities which preclude them from participation in mainstream activities.

People with LDs don't "feel" left out, they ARE left out. Who are you to minimalize another person's experience? Sorry, but you are being very hurtful and dismissive.

EllieBee, Katy was just responding to my tangent about the experiences of gifted children. I know neither of us meant to equate the inconveniences faced by the gifted with hardships faced by those with disabilities. (And, yes, I got your point that one child may be both gifted and LD.)

Sorry if we caused confusion, but the fault was entirely mine. I shouldn't speak for Katy, but I know she and I are as appalled as everyone else that this child was treated in such a manner!

Lol, I scored second-highest on the SATs out of my graduating class, first on the ACTs and did not place on the top THIRD of my class in GPA.

I (and my daughter, just like me, poor kid) are not only "gifted" but have dyslexia, ADHD, and OCD. My DD has an anxiety disorder as well.

She is a great "tester" but struggles day-to-day with her school work and also is under the care of a psychdoc for depression and suicidal issues. And yet there are people who
would negate her struggles and argue that she actually has none.

Sad and ignorant.

I hope you know I would never assert such a thing. Not about your daughter or anyone else's.

As a professor, I followed quite strictly the requirements for students with disabilities, even when it meant considerable extra testing time for me. (And I did so without resentment.)

I can't either. There are numerous points at which this would have been caught. I can't imagine what it could be, but there MUST be something more to this story.

Particularly since the child's name wasn't called in the roll of graduates. One poster has wondered if the omission was deliberate, but Pollyanna that I am, I suspect the child's name was moved (separate list, different spot on the page) to make sure the announcer remembered to allow extra time for her--and the reader somehow screwed up.

Which only begs the question, why didn't somebody notice and say something while the diplomas were still being handed out?

I am still wondering about the rehearsal. I never saw a school that did not have at least one rehearsal for the kids to get their program together. If so, they really screwed up because it should have been caught then, imo.

Oh come on. I was not being dismissive. I was answering a post specifically about the gifted program. I was NOT speaking about you or your daughter or your personal experiences. GMAB

Really? I think missing out on awards ceremonies, graduations, athletic events and pep rallies is kind of crappy.

But I guess what do I know? I only experienced it. You probably know better. Thanks for setting me straight.

Also, I am learning disabled as is my child. But we were both labeled as "gifted" in addition to "learning disabled".

Still, being LD is a DISABILITY. So, yeah, we are both disabled and were disabled children. It is beneficial to have some education before judging and assuming.

ETA: JMO, MOO, IMHO

Again, I was NOT talking about you nor your daughter nor your experiences. NEVER ONCE did I mention your issues. I was speaking specifically about the issues my kids had in the gifted program. It had nothing to do with your experiences.

I did not judge you, nor did I 'set you straight.' You are way over the top with your accusations. Please stop.
