Routh joined the Marines in 2006 and rose to the rank of corporal in 2010. His military specialty was small-arms technician, commonly known as an armorer. He had been stationed at Camp Lejeune, N.C., and served in Iraq from 2007-08 and in the Haiti disaster relief mission in 2010.

He is now in the individual ready reserve. He could be called to duty, but it's uncommon unless he volunteers, 1st Lt. Dominic Pitrone of the Marine Forces Services public affairs office said.

Jeff Kyle, the brother of former Navy SEAL sniper Chris Kyle, issued a statement Monday regarding Kyle’s recent shooting death on behalf of the Kyle and Littlefield families. Suspect Eddie Routh allegedly shot and killed Kyle, 38, and his friend Chad Littlefield at Rough Creek Lodge in Glen Rose, Texas on Saturday.

“My name is Jeff Kyle. I’m here representing my family, the Kyle family, and also the Littlefield family. I am reading a prepared statement prepared by the Kyle family and Littlefield family,” Kyle began.

Mr. Kyle’s friends said he did not know Mr. Routh well — Mr. Kyle became lost trying to find the house, and had to ask a neighbor for directions — but he knew Mr. Routh’s mother, Jodi Routh, who had recently asked for help for her son, a former Marine who spent 15 days in a nearby jail last year after a drunken-driving arrest, and who the authorities said had a history of mental illness.

Ten days after graduating from Midlothian High School, he [Routh] enlisted in the U.S. Marines. A photo in his senior yearbook shows him with a recruiter. He is quoted as saying he wanted to enlist because "I want to be one of the few and the proud."

He served for four years, but his family said Routh's time in Iraq troubled him. His mother hoped a day at the gun range with Kyle and Littlefield last Saturday would serve as a kind of therapy.

Instead, it has created more misery.

Routh's attorney said his client was being treated at the VA Hospital in Dallas as recently as a month ago. He added that Routh remains on medication and at the moment is only interested in seeing his family.

More new detail on Routh from the Dallas Morning News:

Last month, Dallas police say, Routh had at least three run-ins with them — all on the same day.

In the early hours of Jan. 19, Routh was involved in a family violence dispute with a woman over money, grabbed her and held her down against the floor of the house, according to a police report.

Later that morning, he grabbed another woman by her waist and restrained her against her will in a public parking lot.

A woman called police to an apartment complex in the 7600 block of Churchill Way in North Dallas because she feared for Routh’s safety. Routh was in distress and wanting to get help, so officers took him to Green Oaks for a mental health evaluation.

"He's doing a lot better today," Upshaw said. "We've had professionals out to look at him today. He met with his attorney. He's doing a lot better."

In a telephone interview, Routh's attorney told News 8 he met with his client Monday and that it was a very one-sided conversation, with the lawyer doing most of the talking.

The attorney also told us that mental health will be an issue in the defense of his client.

I don't think Chris Kyle was fully informed of the recent LE run-ins with the shooter. He wasn't a stupid man and I think had he known how unstable he had been recently, they wouldn't have been out at a shooting range.

The funeral of Chad Littlefield, who was shot and killed along with Navy SEAL sniper Chris Kyle at a gun range Saturday, will be held at First Baptist Church of Midlothian on Friday at 2 p.m., church officials confirmed.

Littlefield, who was Kyle’s neighbor and workout buddy, is survived by his wife and daughter. His viewing will be at Midlothian Funeral Home on Thursday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Funeral arrangements for Kyle, who is survived by his wife and two children, have not been set.

Terrible tragedy for the family of Chris Kyle and Chad Littlefield.

Police: Navy SEAL sniper's killer 'traded his soul for new truck'

But he didn't get far. His sister, Laura Blevins, called the Midlothian Police Department to report that Routh had come by her and her husband's home and confessed to killing Kyle and Littlefield, according to the affidavit.

He had a big black truck they'd never seen before, and he "told the Blevinses that he had 'traded his soul for a new truck' " before he drove away, headed for Oklahoma to avoid Texas police, according to the affidavit.
