7-year-old Denton boy was likely abused at least a month before his death, police say

Heartbreaking. I just saw a picture of his sweet face on the news. I cannot understand how no one from the school has intervened or asked questions before this happened. The neighbors were unaware he was even living there. And..where is the Dad? Ugh

According to an arrest report, during an interview with detectives, Ho admitted she knew her boyfriend, Todd Lofton Shaw, 52, was abusing her son. The report describes the child's injuries as: a bruised eye, numerous abrasions and bruising on his face, swelling on his neck, bruises all over his body, a burn on his shoulder, puncture wounds and several other injuries.

Five hours later Ho called 911. She told detectives that during that time she watched as her boyfriend "constructed a box to place over the victim's head to muffle the breathing as it became louder and louder."

Investigators said Ho admitted to keeping her son out of school and intentionally neglected to seek medical care for injuries to the child's head, eyes, face, shoulders, and penis to conceal the signs of abuse, and out of fear she would get into trouble.

Excuse me?! I can't believe this keeps happening. She just let him do all of that to her son and only called 911 when he was already dead?

Such an adorable little boy. Who or what could brutalize a child like that? Worse yet how could a mother allow her baby to be harmed by some monster?

Phoenix has an obituary which lists several grandparents. It appears Sabrina Ho Brown was married to Phoenix's dad at some point.

This story has been updated to reflect that Sabrina Ho and Todd Lofton Shaw were indicted on capital murder charges.

A grand jury has indicted Sabrina Ho and her boyfriend Todd Lofton Shaw on charges of capital murder along with injury to a child in the death of her 7-year-old son in April.

Todd Lofton Shaw, 53, was sentenced to life in prison Friday after he pleaded guilty to the murder of his girlfriend’s son in April after extensive, continuous physical abuse.

Four days after Phoenix’s death, his mother, 45-year-old Sabrina Ann Ho, was also arrested and charged with capital murder and injury to a child with intentional serious bodily injury. An affidavit for her arrest alleges that she was intentionally untruthful in her interview with detectives about her role in her son’s death.

Court records indicate she intends to go to trial for the alleged offenses, although, as of Tuesday afternoon, no trial date had been set.

Trial has been delayed. A mistrial was declared yesterday as they were unable to seat a jury. They've started over again today and hope to have a jury seated ready for opening statements tomorrow.

I was a potential juror today, the jury was selected this evening. The defendant was there the entire day. A tough case to hear through the details they could give us.
