Found Deceased TX - Ridge Cole, 28, visiting for his child's surgery, Houston, 11 Nov 2022

How might the medical bills work for this kind of procedure if you didn't have medical insurance? Could financial worries, on top of the emotional pressure of a sick child, have contributed?
He might have had a mental health 'break' and become disoriented.

This is so so tragic and sorrowful.
I cannot imagine the emotions that would already be strained with a child whose illness was so serious it required a long trip to another city for an organ transplant. And then to have this life-changing loss in the midst of that. God bless this family.

Body found in Brays Bayou belongs to father in town for baby's transplant, medical examiner says

The family came to Houston for life-saving surgery for their child, but will now return home without their father. Despite this, they still find gratitude in their hearts.

"They sent me with a message to thank everybody, the media, Houston Police Department, and missing person's detectives. They thank Texas EquuSearch. Genuine, genuine thanks to the City of Houston and the Ronald McDonald House, they have been so hospitable," Edwards said.

Sometimes families raise money, get the surgeon to waive their fee, etc. But likely as a transplant recipient, the child qualifies for Medicaid, which can be retroactive.

Hospitals do a fair amount of pro bono work in situations like these, especially children's hospitals. They don't turn patients away for inability to pay.

Ridge was an incredible husband and best friend since the 8th grade to his amazing wife Sadie, a keep-you-on-your-toes son, annoying but super cool little brother, hilarious nephew, fun cousin, best friend to Mario Matlala and “the Kids” at the skate parks, rowdy dad to his four-legged boy, Caio, and amazing Daddy to his greatest accomplishment and pride and joy, son River.

Ridge was an avid skateboarder and had already started pushing River around the house on his skateboard and teaching him the skateboard ways. River loved to climb on Daddy like a jungle gym and take rides in the car to see nature and the sites.

I used to live near a different part of Brays Bayou and would go for walks along it all of the time. I don't remember it ever being very deep, even when we'd had lots of rain.
I used to walk there too! I lived on Brompton Road 25 years ago while in grad school, about a 30 minute walk on the bayou from 1900 Holcombe. Im sure it’s changed but I agree the structure never seemed dangerous to me.
Maybe he couldn’t swim?

GET OUTTA BROMPTON that is crazy!! UT, late 90s. We probably passed each other on the trail hahaa!!

Did they ever find out what happened to Ridge? He sounds like a great guy and a lot of people (and his dog) are going to miss him terribly. The whole thing is so sad.

Rice ‘97! Will message you!
In any case the story seems sad and odd, perhaps he was seated on the bayou and or walking.
The homeless encampment nearby also gives me pause.

Oh darn - it won't let me read the whole article. I saw that this is being rules as an accidental drowning. So very sad. Would you mind sharing any other details from this article that you feel are most relevant?

Thank you in advance.
Basically that toxicology is pending and will take weeks to months. Chron has requested that the ME update when results are in.
