Why would she hoist herself up to sit on railing? Sadly, I think it was an intentional fall. Jmo.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, passengers are specifically cautioned about climbing, sitting, standing on balcony/deck railings. Such admonitions are for the safety of all passengers. It's up to guests to follow the rules because ignoring them places oneself in danger and possibly others near them. Based on everything I've read/heard about the incident, SB was alone on an upper (public) deck of the ship in the wee hours. There was probably no one around to prevent her from climbing on the railing. I'm not sure if SB intended to jump from the ship or if she was inebriated and unaware of her behaviors. Sad either way. :moo:

The cold reality of 'life goes on' captured in a picture... Other passengers trying to soak up some rays while a crew is looking for evidence when Samantha went missing. No judgment, only wanting to state an observation.

I'm feeling really harsh this morning, I guess. I think life SHOULD go on for all the passengers who didn't commit suicide, and I think suicide on a cruise ship is exceptionally selfish. How many passengers are on that cruise to be with a family member on their last vacation because they're diagnosed with a deadly illness? How many are on there with family trying to reconnect and firm up shaky relationships? How many saved money for this and will never be able to afford a trip like this again? How many are newlyweds celebrating their decision to spend their lives together?

People who commit suicide in quiet, private settings break my heart. Their pain must be intense and unrelenting. But people who plan this to ruin their companion's lives, and mar the lives of hundreds of other people . . . I just think . . . what's your motive?

The fact she fell backwards into the water, had only been married for a year & seemed like a very bubbly nice person judging by her Facebook page, makes it hard to believe this was suicide.

Where were her companions? Why was a young bride of a year alone on a cruise?

It was a 4-day weekend cruise, better known as a "booze cruise".

I've been on Liberty's Deck 10 for a spa treatment, on a cruise from Miami to Cozumel (and other ports - loved the Western Carib). I have also stayed on the spa deck on the Splendor. The ship rocks and rolls a lot up there; whereas deck 5 in the casino is not as rocky.

Just to add, the comments below the article are rather shocking.

If you want to see some :fireworks: check out the cruise forum mentioned earlier in this discussion. Folks who were onboard the now-completed voyage commented on what was taking place during the search and how the "woman overboard" impacted their trip.

I interpret her facebook entries differently - she seemed depressed to me.

I hope this doesn't cause more people to do this. Pretty much, if you want to stop all partying on the ship and ruin everyone's vacation, jump off early in the cruise.

Hi Kittybunny

Is there any info about the male companion she was with on the cruise? Brother, friend, bf?

Do we know if she and KB were separated?

I don't, sorry! I haven't seen the person she was with identified, just referred to as "companion" - I hadn't even seen that it was a male.

I also don't know if SB and KB were separated; all articles I've read say she was married to him; and he was traveling to be with family and wasn't with her.

FWIW, if you have time and want the play-by-play from passengers who were onboard the Carnival Liberty for the 4-night voyage, here's the link to the discussion on a popular cruise forum: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=2355636. Bear in mind that the site is not as well-monitored as Websleuths and can be snarky at times ;)

FBI joins Carnival Cruise Line in investigation of woman who went overboard

"A returning passenger on the cruise told KPRC 2's Sofia Ojeda that a blood stain was found near the spot on the tenth deck where Broberg went overboard. The passenger also said a knife was found in the trash nearby.

Carnival Cruise Line said that the surveillance video of Broberg's fall showed no signs of foul play that the stain on the deck is not blood".

I'm glad the FBI is involved, and hopefully will be able to thoroughly investigate the "someone was murdered on my ship" rumors flying around now.

There is no confirmation that she was alone, nor do we have confirmation that anyone saw her fall overboard.

BUT, if someone did see her (or was with her), they didn't report it.

I thought video showed her go overboard.

... she was not reported missing to ship personnel by companions until Friday around noon.

... she was onboard the ship with friends.

Carnival confirms that no foul play is currently suspected, but provided no comment as to whether Broberg was alone at the time of the incident. Broberg's family says they are "coming together" at this time.

From link a few posts back:

"Based on the video analysis, we can confirm that it appears she climbed up and sat on a deck railing and subsequently fell backwards," Carnival spokeswoman Jennifer De La Cruz said.

Coast Guard Was Not Alerted Until 15 Hours After Passenger Plunged Into Ocean

by Inside Edition 4:38 PM EDT, May 16, 2016

As the Carnival Liberty returns to port in Galveston, Texas, new questions are being asked about the missing passenger that plunged off the deck.

Read: Coast Guard Suspends Search for Mother of Four Who Plummeted From Carnival Cruise

Samantha Broberg, 33, fell off the deck of the ship at 2 a.m. Friday but the coastguard wasn't notified until 5 p.m. the next day – 15 hours later.

Carnival says no one saw Broberg fall.

Her travelling companions say they raised the alarm at 9 a.m. when she wasn't in her cabin...

So looking at the video in the news link posted above, and then looking at pictures of the railings, I think a tall person could manage to fall. Bear with me...looking at the balconies from the rooms, they're shorter. If I were leaning over or maybe drunk and not in my right mind and throwing up, then I could see falling over. Even over the chest level ones. I know this isn't how she fell, but I was just making a note of it.

Yes. I'm 5'4". Standard (balcony) railings are just below my b**bs. Railings on public decks are slightly higher, but a tall person could easily lean/fall over the railing.

So it isn't impossible, but you'd have to be goofing around or drunk for it to happen. I know of a person who fell over a stair railing down the middle of a 4 story stair case to the concrete floor of the basement level. He says he slipped on a step and went over but I can't see how that could be. I think maybe he was sitting/sliding on the railing. He's lucky he lived.
