I follow traffic laws because I don't want to pay the fine or the increased auto insurance rates a poor drinivg record costs.

That, plus it's just plain safer. Especially when you've got a vehicle coming up from behind you, traveling faster than you are, it's always safer to signal your intent to change lanes. Otherwise, that faster vehicle is likely to swing into the other lane to pass you just as you're pulling into that lane. That's how accidents happen. That's why we're required to use our turn signals when we're going to change lanes.

Exactly what happen causing a fatal accident to a friend of mine. Multi veh accident because of that not using turn signal... JMHO from knowledge of it happening in my friends case.

Sandra was moving to the right like you are supposed to when an emergency vehicle comes up from behind
I doubt if anyone could pass her unless they drove up onto the sidewalk

I'm going to have disagree.

You can disagree all you want, but that is their job, and that is what they are trained to do.

But without putting her turn signal on like she was supposed to. And if it was an emergency vehicle on its way to somewhere up ahead, it might have thought she wasn't going to move to the right (since, you know, she didn't signal her intention to move to the right), and it might have moved to the right to pass her, just as she was moving to the right without signaling. That's why you signal.

In my state it is the LAW to move to the right. It is expected. Whenever I heard an emergency vehicle, I knew everyone was moving to the right. Like me, I think most people are trying to figure out where to go to the right. Parked cars, intersection? Looking looking. Everyone is slowing down , moving to the right. I have no idea what happens on big freeways but she was not on one.

Passing on the right is illegal. I don't think emergency vehicles do that. I have never seen it

Passing on the right is not illegal. Emergency vehicles do it all the time. Non-emergency vehicles do it all the time.

I think every person should have the right to decide when to end their life and should be given the opportunity to do so

It's one of those things... may be legal under some cases, maybe illegal in others.

In my mind, moving traffic violations all break down to, "Don't cause an accident". So did I cause a wreck, or almost cause a wreck? No? Then not convinced it makes sense to be cited for it.

There is something to be said about that.

However, did Sandra Bland sit down and make a rational, well thought out decision to kill herself? Not a chance.

There are plenty of suicide survivors who are happy they didn't succeed.

That information is 100% wrong. That is not is not an official source. <modsnip>

Since we are talking about Texas, here is what the official Texas Driver Handbook says on page 41.

Passing on the Right

In Texas, you can pass on the right only when conditions permit you to do so safely.

1. The road is clear of parked vehicles or other things and is wide enough for two or more lanes in each direction.

2. You are on a one-way road.

3. You may pass on a paved shoulder when the vehicle you are passing is slowing or stopped on the main traveled portion of the highway, disabled, or preparing to make a left turn.

Do not pass on the right by driving off the paved portion of the highway.

Wow. Everyone complies with that law in your state? No one ever just continues driving along, oblivious to the fact that there's an emergency vehicle behind them? Seriously?

Despite that, it is also the LAW to use your turn signal when changing lanes.

Does everyone do that in your state, too? Did SB do that?

Being as I live in Florida (aka "God's waiting room"), I see tons of senior citizens driving along oblivious to emergency vehicles and other traffic around them. I've seen them be in accidents, and I've seen them cause accidents. I've seen them get pulled over and ticketed.

When I was little, I saw my grandmother march down to the DMV and turn in her driver's license after she got ticketed for not using her turn signal. (Smart woman; she realized she wasn't able to drive safely anymore. Most of 'em don't do that, though.)

It seems like a minor thing, failing to use your signal to indicate your intention to change lanes, but it can and does cause accidents — sometimes very serious ones. There's a reason it's the LAW.

In the state of Missouri it is.

There are plenty who failed & were not happy. BTW I have no reason to believe SB's decision was not rational & well thought out.

I don't know the numbers but I believe when most people decide to end their lives they are ill and would not want to commit suicide otherwise.
