So many lives ruined and for what?

I'm not sure we even know what any motive was in this crime except for street cred or proving self as a foot soldier ? Maybe payback or something. So mindless, so pointless, so many lives of everyone wasted, even the perpetrators have lost everything - the father and the step mother simply as they wanted to bring fresh rolled up towels to mop up a murder scene it looks like. Why??? What mad crazy street life is that about?

Possible motive may have been robbery. Christopher Preciado may have seen the amount of cash that Matthew Guerra was flashing on Social Media and thought robbing him during a staged drug deal would be an easy way to gain some of that money. Guerra may have pulled a gun when Preciado tried robbing him and that is when Preciado started shooting.

I'm thinking Guerra was shot in the front seat of the car and then removed and dragged on the ground to be placed in the back seat so Preciado could drive the car to hid it. LE may have found a gun belonging to Guerra in the car and possibly bullets and spent casings that belonged to that gun. Hopefully we will learn more during the trail as to what evidence LE found and their theory on motive.

My gut says he felt some how "dissed" and wanted to prove something. No reason at all for killing A pregnant woman sitting in a car.... just a horrible horrible crime. The whole life style, gangs, drugs, violence is just mindboggling and useless.

I was really shocked watching the social media videos that were adjacent to this case, revealing 'cartel life' and how these young men are lost into it and their belief systems and rivalries. Also shocked how open it was and how gun events, drive by shootings, executions, street fire, innocent passers by struck by stray bullets, random hits, organised shoot outs, hearing gunfire in the streets on a daily basis is just normal life for many people. I live in a huge city not in the USA and it's a terrifying idea to me that people are living all day every day like that. Sad :(

“I fully acknowledge that the decision not to seek the death penalty will be difficult for the families of Savanah Soto and Matthew Guerra,” Gonzales said in a written statement. “I understand that no decision in this matter can be without its pain or consequences. Every case is different, and the goal is always to make a decision that is measured, thoughtful, and to the best of my ability, is fair, just, and in line with the values of our community.”

^^^ Here's what I had to say back in the middle of Feb., and apparently I had his number then, before this latest. It's a bummer for him to be in jail, again. He had health issues last time he was in, and now this time, but... MOO, I don't know why he chose to do what he did because it was wrong what his son did, and wrong that he tried to help cover it up.

Agree @nhmemorymaker …… wonder if perhaps, this one will agree to testify against the others?

And from what I recall of the video that surfaced then, IIRC the mom rather surreptitiously appeared from the back seat of the pickup, handed some paper towels to someone and was there after the fact? My recollection was it was something to do with the car, victims, and having moved the vehicle (crime scene) to another location?

What about tampering with evidence, accessory after the fact, conspiracy? I mean not being charged with anything? SMH. IANAL. MOO

The prosecution requested another continuance on the day of jury selection, claiming it was due to a health emergency in the DAs office, although later they claimed it was for “further investigation”. The judge wasn’t having it and said if they weren’t ready for trial after two years and plenty of notice and on the day trial was set to begin, she was going to dismiss all charges. Infuriating from the victim’s family perspective but the DA claimed in court it was a health emergency and then later the DAs office put out a statement it was for further investigation, so this all on the DAs office. They can refile if they want, but seems likely they weren’t feeling particularly confident about the case.

I'm confused. I suspect she's given compelling evidence against her husband and step-son?

Also, highly possible she didn't know what was going on. We know she turned up to the crime scene with towels that the alleged perpetrator used to wipe down the door and that subsequently he drove the car a little way up the lane with the deceased inside and then ditched it in the parking area at the back of the apartment blocks.

It is possible that the step mother wasn't aware of what had happened and / or was under duress and coercion (even threat?), it is possible that her health is in crisis and the courts see no purpose in pursuing her for example what if she has an end of life condition or if she has harmed herself or has been harmed by others and is now chronically debilitated? Or has had such a severe mental breakdown that she's not making sense? It would be a shame for the judge to keep waiting on her in order for the trial to take place. Speculation on my part, obviously.

Also maybe she's told everything she knows and is now a key witness to prosecution? Are they allowed to do a deal with someone in those circumstances?

ETA: She's clearly not being kept in 'witness protection' or kept safe from attackers as she's just gone in a regular taxi with no guards.

I really don't think her life is at risk.

This is not a cartel or organized crime case.

These things happen frequently, only in this case the suspect went overboard and murdered a pregnant woman, so the case went high profile. Matthew Guerra (who was murdered) was selling marijuana on social media and Chris Preciado was buying it.

I highly doubt if Chris Preciado or Matthew Guerra have cartel connections etc. Selling drugs on SM and flashing money on SM would not be a cartel activity. This is a sad case of two teens who lost direction and went down the wrong path. CP took it to new level by killing both MG and Savannah. As to why CP did what he did was beyond me, but I don't see organized crime behind this.

I doubt if anyone beside Chris and his family are involved.

No she’s definitely not a prosecution witness and she’s not in a health crisis or anything of that nature - that would look very different in the courtroom to what happened. It’s pretty clear the prosecution simply wasn’t prepared to move forward- for whatever reason - and the judge was frustrated because it has been years and they waited until the jury pool was called and ready to go for voir dire to request another continuance. They can refile charges but they didn’t put out a statement that they would do so, only that they were going to do further investigation. That is a pretty aggressive indicator - along with the other circumstances- that they weren’t happy or confident with their case.

My impression -- the State got on the wrong side of the judge, wasn't ready. Pushed for an extension with scant basis. Iiuc the judge threatened to dismiss the charges so the State withdrew them, preserving the option to retry them later.
