Mo Robinson, the 25 yr old Irish lorry driver allegedly trafficking people from Bulgaria to Britain via Zeebrugge. 39 people are now dead in the back of a lorry in Essex. Boris and Cummings know preventing this will be even harder if we damage our relationships with EU partners.

I remember following the court case, the driver could hear the people in the back of the lorry banging on the sides of the lorry as the oxygen ran out, and ignored them :(:(

In both instances, these people will have most likely spent their life savings on an opportunity to escape to what they hoped would be a better life. Breaks my heart.

Oh man, i tried to tuck that story deep in my memory. That was so disturbing. Do you recall the outcome? Sentence? (Off to look)

I recognize that I’m living in privilege, but I understand the basic psychology behind the “9 meals from anarchy”

They had hope for a better future... (not that I’m supporting breaking laws but I do emphasize.)

Makes much more sense geographically, if they came in from Belgium. Bonkers route otherwise. Why was the Ireland/Wales connection mentioned so early on though?

This is a good article about the 71 - includes a photo of the lorry which is significantly smaller than the one found today, can't believe there were 71 in there...

Austria's migrant disaster: Why did 71 die?

JUNE 2018: On Thursday, a Hungarian court convicted a group of smugglers for their roles in the trafficking and deaths. Four were found guilty of homicide and other charges, and were sentenced to 25 years in prison; 10 others were convicted on charges of smuggling and belonging to a criminal organization, and received sentences from three to 12 years. “They knew the truck was packed, they knew that families and mothers with children were in the truck and that the people inside could die,” Judge Janos Jadi said. “They died in cruel circumstances, in a lot of suffering. But none of the defendants did anything.”

Interesting stuff. Who owns the Lorry company, an Irish woman but the business is in Bulgaria? How common is that I wonder.

I think I found the owner based on comments on the suspects FB, looks like they have had legal troubles in the past with their company.

Is it possible he has taken over driving from someone else?

I wonder if he opened the back and called the police himself.

Is it possible that the driver was unaware of what he was transporting?
"Mo Robinson arrested over lorry deaths Mo Robinson has posted on social media images of the lorries he drives The horrific find has sparked one of the biggest murder investigations in British history – and was described by Essex Police as an ‘absolute tragedy’. Officials believe it is a case of human trafficking because of the way the bodies were found. Police said the people have not yet been identified and the lorry will be moved shortly."

Belgian prosecutors begin investigation
Eric Van Duyse, a spokesman for the Belgian federal prosecutor's office, said it had begun an investigation that would seek to establish whether the trailer travelled through Belgium, adding: "It seems that the lorry has been shipped from the port of Zeebrugge."

He continued: "These two elements have to be checked out for there to be an inquiry, because we have just had information to say that this has happened, but the inquiry has to establish whether this has happened or not

"We have no idea at the moment how long the lorry spent in Belgium, it could be hours or days, we just don't know.

"We have got a good relationship with the justice and police office of Great Britain... but we have not a lot of information at this moment."

BREAKING Lorry and trailer begin journey

The lorry and trailer have begun the journey from the Waterglade Industrial Estate in Grays, Essex, to a secure location in nearby Tilbury Docks, where the bodies of the 39 victims can be recovered.

A scene cordon will remain in place, and Deputy Chief Constable Pippa Mills thanked businesses affected by the closure for their co-operation."

On the BBC website there's a photo of the lorry beginning it's journey to Tilbury Docks. Sobering knowing the bodies of the deceased are still in there. :(

This bit from the NY Times article really got to me:

"Just 20 minutes into their journey, the driver suspected something was wrong and called Mr. Georgiev, who told him not to stop.

Forty minutes into the trip, the smugglers, who had neglected to give their human cargo water bottles, pulled into a gas station. But when they saw police officers nearby, they decided not to open the truck to give the people anything to drink.

The driver called the boss again, reporting that the passengers “knocked like hell at the gas station.”

As the screams from the back of the truck grew louder, the driver and his partner grew increasingly terrified, according to testimony. On previous trips, the smugglers had communicated with their passengers by cellphone, but this time, the communication failed.

There were more panicked calls between the bosses and the driver, who noticed that the passengers were trying to bore a hole out of the box to get air.

An hour and 20 minutes into the trip, the screaming continued, with the driver clearly able to make out one word, repeated over and over: “Please.”"

Thank you, I appreciate the the time you took to share this!

The article is what I was looking for.

MOO, the sentences should have accumulated for each death. As in, they should spend their remaining days behind bars.
