Satbir Singh, Chief Executive of the Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants, said:

We are horrified by the news of the deaths of 39 people in horrendous circumstances.

Nobody should be in any doubt that the ultimate responsibility for these deaths lies with government policy which has deliberately closed down safe and legal routes into Britain.

We need more than empty expressions of shock and sadness from Priti Patel and Boris Johnson, we need a commitment to opening safe and legal routes to the UK, and quick decisions on applications from people seeking to make a better life here.

People move, they always have and they always will. Nobody should have to risk their lives to do so.

Wait a minute. This tragedy is being blamed upon the British government now, for trying to control illegal immigration? That seems unfair. JMO

Best ignored l think. The only people responsible are the unscrupulous individuals who took their money in exchange for 'safe' passage.

This bit from the NY Times article really got to me:

Horrific, and I'd definitely say that was intentional murder - the smugglers knew those 71 people were going to die and they just abandoned them on the road anyway.

It's very unfair but we have a lot of political mud-slinging going on so I'm not surprised. It won't be the end of it, either!

I am shocked that lorries aren't checked more thoroughly though. I wonder when the back doors of this particular truck were last opened.

BBM quite. Either someone is being paid to turn a blind eye or checks really need to be stepped up.

Sounds more like body thefts to be sold for black market body harvesting. MOO.

Is it possible that the people could have sneaked onto the truck without the driver knowing?

That has certainly happened before - a handful of people jumping out from the back of trucks having hidden behind boxes or whatever, but I reckon 39 is too many to try and pull a stunt like that. Will be interesting to see if that's what the driver claims happened, and whether he is actually charged with murder.

I see it being mentioned in media that it looks more like human trafficking than illegal immigration. Do they use the term human trafficking broadly to mean the same thing as illegal immigration or could that mean something more sinister?

It sounds to me like illegal immigration... Sorry, but I won't blame the government. We have to realize that without laws, we would be in chaos.

So sad that so many lost their lives.

No not the same but heavily linked. Trafficked people get forced into trades. Nail salons and sex work and takeaways spring to mind. It is possible they were trafficked. Rhe people concerned are usually tricked into it or have to 'pay off' the debt for being brought over.

Very possible that the driver picked up the unit without any knowledge of what was on it and may not have been transporting the unit a long time, only a small portion of the journey. IMO,

Police say the "dignity of the victims" will be reserved as their bodies are recovered

Deputy Chief Constable Pippa Mills made a statement at the scene. She said:

“The lorry and the trailer will be moved to a secure location at Tilbury Docks so the bodies can be recovered while reserving the dignity of the victims.

“We are yet to identify them and must manage this sensitively with their families.

“I appreciate how much this attention will continue to attract and the public and media appetite to understand what happened.

“We also need to understand what has happened and Essex Police will be working with all our partners to ensure this happens as quickly as possible.”

It is said to be ‘highly unlikely’ that the 39 people are Bulgarian
