Just reading up on this - while waiting for this ruling ! and indeed sentencing can be done earlier.

Sometimes sentencing doesn't happen immediately after a verdict, and will be delayed for background reports.
What happens at a Scottish criminal court case - mygov.scot


Which tells me I must have only ever followed cases in Scotland which needed background reports as there has always been a 4 week gap from verdict to sentencing.

BREAKING: The 16-year-old found guilty of abducting, raping and murdering Alesha MacPhail in Bute last year can now be identified as Aaron Thomas Campbell.


Judge Lord Matthews lifted the reporting restriction on the boy’s identity at the High Court in Glasgow this morning.

Until now we've not been allowed to name him because he's under 18, but today, Lord Mathews lifted reporting restrictions because he says "It's in the public interest".

I’m so glad he’s lost yet another chance to have the upper hand. From his trial and the the way he acted after he killed Alesha, he seems to think he’s so smart and cunning.

me neither, looked like it was going to a hold while an appeal came through. Probably the Defence QC realised it was just postponing the inevitable and not worth the extra work.
