A 15-year-old boy has appeared in court charged with the murder of a nine-year-old girl.

Police earlier named the victim as Aria Thorpe, who was found dead at a house in Lime Close, Weston-super-Mare, on Monday evening.

The teenage accused, who cannot be named due to his age, appeared at Bristol Magistrates' Court on Wednesday and spoke only to confirm his name and address.

A police cordon remains in place at the scene of Aria's death as forensics officers continue their work.

Interesting that this note sends condolences to Aria ,her mother and sister but not her brother.

This is so tragic, and very close to where I live. I have mutual fb friends in common with her poor mum 😔

Thanks for posting this Skigh

My head was leaning towards the teenager being a family member and this essentially confirms it imo

Heartbroken for the mother

Kind of off subject, but I wonder what makes boys and men kill? I know women kill too, but majority are male. Terrifying, but would love the answer. I'm sure there are many reasons. Mind boggling.

I'd wondered if this was the case as the police were called to a property so Aria was likely to have been attacked in her own home. How utterly tragic.

I wouldn't rule out the boy being a stepbrother. If this is a blended family situation in which the stepbrother kills his stepsister, there would be no reason to send condolences to the father of the killer.

This evening, members of the community came together from 6pm to pay an emotional tribute to her.

The vigil was organised by church ministers from Weston and Worle to offer an "informal" opportunity for the local community to show support and care for the family and friends of Aria.

IMO a big part of it is biology - mostly testosterone levels (but research also has shown low serotonin levels contribute to aggressiveness).

In general, most species of male mammals are far more aggressive than females; often they are protecting territory or mates or both. Wouldn't be much different for human males than non-human primates or other mammals.

Aria's father, Tom Thorpe, added: 'It's hard to put into words how devastating it is, our little Aria, that you're up there with the angels looking over us.
'How sad it's going to be not hearing 'Dad, how long left?' on our long journeys back and forth at weekends.
Your other little family down here in Portsmouth will forever miss you.
