Hughes said he would 'get home and get nasty'
Ms Prior states there are 'many examples' of texts where Hughes is in bed and Tustin was being left to deal with Arthur downstairs.

Hughes: "There's sometimes I would go upstairs and pay bills because it was quiet up there. I was up there quite a bit."

Ms Prior asks about a message where Hughes said he would 'get home and get nasty' and 'it won't be pretty'.

Hughes explains he meant he would tell Arthur off and denies they were threats of violence.

He offers similar explanations for the text phrases 'go to town on him' and 'end him'.

Hughes accepts by the start of May things were not 'going well' with Arthur, 'something had gone badly wrong' and he was 'writing unpleasant things' about what he would do to him

Audio of Arthur crying and asking for water
Hughes admits in May he lied to the school saying Arthur was 'grand' and that he had been busy at work.

He also accepts that he told the school Arthur had been in the garden enjoying the sunshine even though he was not going in the garden at that stage.

Hughes agrees he turned down help from the school and 'life story' work from social services.

The court is played an audio clip which Tustin sent of Arthur crying and asking for water, to which Hughes replied: "It's boring now."

Hughes: "I was told by Emma he was having food and drink. My response was that the whole situation was boring because he was doing it for attention, I felt."

Ms Prior states Arthur was saying 'daddy's going to kill me'. Hughes denies he was telling Arthur he was going to kill him

Claims Hughes searched for 'pressure points'
Ms Prior turns to the incident where he sent the Taser picture to Tustin. She asks why he then searched for 'pressure points' at the same time.

Hughes: "There was another story in America about police brutality with pressure to the neck and I was reading about that."

He denies he was 'looking up ways to kill Arthur' and 'ways to cause harm without leaving traces'.

Hughes reiterates he never pressure pointed Arthur and states he gave 'little squeezes' to his neck as an affectionate gesture.

He explains the text phrase 'just take his jaw off' was another way of him saying Arthur's period of misbehaviour would be stopped.

"Could have used a lot better words," he adds.

Hughes thought Arthur was 'attention seeking'
Asked about the video of Arthur slapping and scratching himself as well as asking for a doctor Hughes says he thought his son was 'attention-seeking'.

He tells the court he did eventually call the doctors at the start of June, primarily about his eating at that stage, but he cannot remember what advice was given adding he was just referred on.

Ms Prior asks why he called Arthur a 'disgrace' to Tustin in response to the video.

Hughes: "Because he said Emma caused those scratches."

Ms Prior asks if he ever challenged Tustin about how she spoke about Arthur after she sent a text saying 'f****** launch this lying little f***'.

Hughes: "I didn't agree with it but it sort of became normal."

'You were beating this little boy up every day'
Hughes denies all of the rules in Tustin's home were his rules and denies being the one who decided Arthur should stand by the door. He denies that Tustin regularly asked him what she should do about Arthur.

He agrees he would tell her to 'put him by the back door and put him in the shower', and confirms the shower did not always mean to wash him, but merely to put Arthur in that space.

Ms Prior: "By this time you were beating this little boy up every day."

Hughes: "No."

'Had Arthur just become 'it' by this stage?'
He states he believed it was the lack of eating that was causing him to be weak.

Hughes states it did not occur to him Arthur might be thirsty because he was having to stand for long periods.

Ms Prior: "Had Arthur just become 'it' by this stage, a thing you took frustrations out on?"

Hughes: "No."

Judge Wall forwards two jury questions.

In response to the first Hughes explains Arthur was not given McDonald's, ice cream or chip shop dinners - referred to previously in the trial - because Tustin stated he did not deserve 'treats'.

In reply to who discovered Arthur's bruises in April, Hughes says he did, then showed them to his mother Joanne Hughes.

'Sometimes I would slap him...'
Hughes confirms Arthur was being 'openly rude to him' and calling him things like 'vile little rat' by the end of May.

He says: "It was frustrating, sometimes I would slap him as a result of it."

Hughes accepts he also 'screamed in his face'.

Ms Prior states he was an 'abusive dad' at that stage.

Hughes: "I don't think I was."

He confirms he went to Tustin's neighbour to apologise for the shouting. He denies he was shouting 'I'm going to kill you' to Arthur but accepts Arthur had probably said 'daddy's going to kill me'.

'The fact is you are a selfish man'
The recording of part of Hughes' interview is played to the court. He is heard telling officers he liked to collect Panini sticker books and play the Playstation but did not want the kids involved in that because it was 'my thing'.

He also said he liked routine himself and gave an analogy that if he was playing left back for a football team and a new left winger joined he would want to leave the team.

Ms Prior states that moving into Tustin's home was Hughes' 'first opportunity to run things your way with your rules'.

Hughes: "Not all the time because I was going to Emma's house."

Ms Prior: "The fact is you are a selfish man."

Hughes: "No."

Ms Prior says when the children wanted to have a go on the Playstation while Hughes was using it he wanted them to 'p*** off'.

Hughes: "I wanted five minutes peace yes but I let them have a go."

'I used hitting Arthur as a very last resort'
Ms Prior: "Did it occur to you when you laid hands on your son you needed to do something about your behaviour?"

Hughes: "I used hitting Arthur as a very last resort."

Ms Prior asks if he thought he needed to stop hitting Arthur.

Hughes: "Yes, I sat in the shower and would cry for an hour."

Ms Prior states that he went on to hit Arthur again.

Hughes: "When I would go to have a word with Arthur again, I had Emma over my shoulder saying 'words aren't working, just whack him, get it over with, come and spend time with us'."

Ms Prior puts it to him he made Arthur stand by the front door for up to 14 hours a day.

Hughes: "It wasn't just me. I tried moving him off the door. But the difficulties I faced. The arguments it would cause."

Ms Prior: "Is it your case you were living with a woman who had you completely under her control?"

Hughes: "Yes."

Ms Prior: "You did what she said and what she wanted?"

Hughes: "Yes."

Hughes asked if he'd lost all sense of love, care and parenting
Ms Prior states Hughes was aware Tustin had been a victim of domestic violence in the past and punched a hole in her door anyway.

She says: "You were in control in this household weren't you."

Hughes: "No. I really wasn't."

Ms Prior states he 'broke' Tustin. Hughes denies that he did.

Ms Prior moves on to June 12. Hughes accepts Tustin asked him to put the camera in the living room because she was concerned about things Arthur was saying had been done to him.

The court hears the text where Hughes said he would 'dash my food off his head'.

Ms Prior asks if he had 'lost all sense' of love, care and parenting by then.

Hughes: "No."

'She was threatening to commit suicide'
Ms Prior asks Hughes if he still loved Tustin. He says: "It was a strain, a very big strain."

Hughes adds he did not want to live with Tustin at this time. Asked whether he could have 'swallowed' his pride and gone back to his mother's home he says: "Looking back yes, but it wasn't easy."

Ms Prior states Hughes could not swallow his pride.

Hughes: "I could because the incident in January with my dad, I apologised. It wasn't easy. I had Emma in the background saying I wouldn't find anyone who would put up with what she had.

"She was threatening to commit suicide. It was just passing comments. She said if I didn't want to be with her she didn't see a reason to carry on. If I went to leave I was told by Emma I could stay but Arthur couldn't. I said me and Arthur always came as a package and if I went to collect my stuff I was blocked."

'You didn't care about that little boy at all'
Ms Prior reads the text where Hughes said he was 'prepped and ready for you to take my soul'. She states he wanted to have sex with Tustin despite also wanting to leave her.

Hughes: "It wasn't as easy as that."

He accepts Arthur was awake and downstairs at the time.

Ms Prior: "You didn't care about that little boy at all."

Hughes: "I did yes."

Ms Prior asks why Hughes got Tustin pregnant if he did not want to be with her.

Hughes says all three pregnancies were not planned.

Ms Prior: "Have you heard of condoms. Is there some reason you couldn't use one? "

Hughes: "She told me they irritated her lady parts down there."

He denies he ever ran her salt water baths and denies knowing she used salt to ease inflammation.

Hughes denies scaring Arthur
The living room footage from June 13 is played. It shows Hughes bending down and speaking to Arthur in front of the camera and then hitting him on the head.

Hughes says he was not shouting but accepts it would have been scary for Arthur. He describes the hit to his head as a 'scuff'.

He does not accept it was the same treatment as the incident where Tustin hit Arthur. Hughes says he had spoken to Arthur before and it was not a 'random attack'.

Ms Prior puts it to him he cannot 'accept any responsibility for the cruelty to Arthur'.

Hughes: "I can."

Ms Prior: "You scared that little boy didn't you."

Hughes: "No."
