Note: no date is given in the Mail as to the actual date of the find so I have given this thread today's date pending clarification.

Grandfather tells how boy, 13, ran into house 'with skull in his hand' - leading police to discover man's remains buried in field in last 20 years

Police have unearthed the human bones of a man in a cornfield after a teenage boy ran into his house holding onto a skull.

Officers say the unearthed 'skull and other remains' belonged to an adult male and believe they were buried in the last 20 years.

Police were called to the scene after the bones were discovered by a pair of teenagers playing football on farmland.

Charles Medlam, who has been a farmer in the area for 41 years, claimed his grandson Jack Grant, 13, had ran into the house 'with the skull in his hand'.

So who can we find who's been missing in South Yorkshire for less than 20 years?

Remains belonged to a man who died less than 20 years ago.

The discovery, in land near Swaithe in Barnsley, was reported to police on Sunday afternoon (February 4th)

While police are treating the death as unexplained, they are treating the scene - on land off Caulke Lane and Mitchell's Street - as they would a murder investigation.

Drones are being used to map the area and a post-mortem examination will be carried out at Sheffield's Medico-Legal Centre on Wednesday.

A 13-year-old boy was visiting his grandma’s house and having a kickabout on the patio when the ball shot into a nearby field. When the boy went to retrieve the ball from the edge of a farmer’s cornfield, he made the macabre discovery.

He carried the skull back into his house to show his shocked gran, who at first thought it was a dog.

But his grandfather, farmer Charles Medlam, 64, told them: “That’s human, phone the police!”

---
“We have got people who have been missing in the area and that is one of our main lines of inquiry,” the officer continued.

“The skull was not entirely complete but you can tell it’s a skull. There were about half a dozen bones found as well.

It is believed police are looking at two cases involving missing men from the area.

The first is Edmund ‘Neil’ Spencer, who went missing from his home in Barnsley in January 2001.

His car was found abandoned in a Tesco car park and his seriously ill mum made a plea for information.
Police fear he was a murder victim but have never found a body.
---
The second missing person is murder victim Thomas Groome, 53, whose body was never found.

In 2016 his partner June Buttle, 56, was jailed for 16 years for his manslaughter and her son Jason Thaxter was jailed for life.

The court heard Buttle’s son helped her chop his body up.

If they've only found a partial skull and a few bones, I'm thinking the second one sounds possible? Unless they haven't done a full excavation yet?
