Bomb disposal experts were spotted on Alston Road, in Middleton-in-Teesdale, on Thursday evening after police uncovered 'hazardous substances'.
Durham Police previously confirmed they initially carried out a raid on a home and three people were arrested on Wednesday.
However, despite a large police presence remaining at the scene on Thursday, the force reassured the public there was 'no risk to the wider community'.
However, just hours later the bomb squad was pictured at the scene with residents reporting an 'explosion'.
