Family would 'support lifting of the restriction', court told

The judge asks Mr Hurst of PA about his views. He says he agrees with the judge's comments about potentially raising restrictions on the day of sentencing.
Prosecutor Deanna Heer KC says she consulted Brianna's family about whether reporting restrictions should be lifted.
"They would support the lifting of the restriction," she says. Mrs Heer said the family recognises they are 'not the only views'.
She says they are 'broadly in favour', but understand the 'overall picture'. The judge says she saw the family's comments outside court yesterday and describes them as 'hugely impressive'.
She says the family's views are 'something that I have take into consideration'.

Bit disappointing they are choosing to wait until sentencing. Not sure it really makes any sense as the families have already had plenty of time to “prepare” for it.

IMO
If somebody decides to commit a heinous crime,
he or she should be prepared for ALL consequences.

I agree Honey.
Plus, the names being released now could work well, both for the two murderers' and for their families.

It's almost Christmas - they will hit the headlines for a day at most - people have other priorities.

Being released at sentencing time - January perhaps ? - will probably make the interest and articles last much longer.

I think that everyone local will know ,but I suppose it steps up a level when it becomes headline news in the media and various people who knew the pair start telling their stories about them.

Agreed Dotta, but there are also consequences that will be faced by innocent parties - families, parents etc. There will be hate mail, all sorts of stories in the press etc, who knows how they will be treated in the street. They may wish to move away from the area or change their names etc.

Edited to add: Not saying they shouldn't be named, just whether a delay until sentencing is a balanced outcome. Justice Yip mentioned today that Girl X's family have already received death threats.

These two will be national figures of notoriety for the rest of their lives a la Thompson Venables. That is not going to change.

I feel desperately sorry for all of their families caught up in this. Grandparents, aunts ,uncles siblings will all probably suffer repercussions.

There is always a chance of this unfortunately.
I obviously really hope the families don't get hate mail etc but I see no reason why they couldn't have been named today.

I think the anticipation of revealing their identities will make any potential threats worse. It makes sense to get it out the way and whilst there can be many reasons for why they conceal their identity for me it should be released. If you commit a crime like this, you don't deserve any sort of protection in ANY FORM.

REPORTING RESTRICTIONS WILL BE LIFTED ON FEBRUARY 2

"I am unable to conclude that there is a good reason to maintain reporting restrictions following the defendants' conviction and sentence," the judge says.
She says that waiting until they are 18 would be an 'unreasonable and unreasonable restriction on the freedom of the press'.
She says she will lift the reporting restrictions, but this is delayed until the sentencing date on February 2.

Defendants 'identified online'

JY: “I am aware the defendants have been identified online. Where breaches have been brought to the authorities attention, action has been taken.”

The judge says the “vast majority of those contacted” have removed such posts, although “one offender apparently located outside the jurisdiction has not done so”.

JY: “It is inevitable that the defendants’ identities will become widely known at some stage.
“I am unable to conclude there is a good reason to maintain reporting restrictions following conviction and sentence.

There is a strong public interest in full reporting on an exceptional case.

Brianna Ghey's killers will be named

Justice Yip says a “balance can be struck” by lifting the order but imposing a “stay” on this.

“I direct that the order shall be lifted, allowing the reporting of the defendants’ identities.
The effect will be stayed until the time of the sentencing hearing.”

The Judge said:

"Defendants have vulnerabilities beyond their youth'".

How come these vulnerabilities were NOT addressed before this heinous crime???

In fact, they were diagnosed only AFTER the murder of an innocent victim.

Sources close to the investigation have told the Mail that Girl X had been expelled from several schools, most recently for selling cannabis 'gummies' or sweets to pupils. She was caught after children became ill and teachers were informed.

'She had problems at school but she had never been in trouble with the police, she had no previous convictions and her family life seemed very ordinary,' said a source.

However, they added: 'As well as her fascination with murder and torture, Girl X told friends she was into satanism and the occult. She claimed she identified as a witch. It is baffling why she behaved this way.'

She boasted - falsely - of having killed two other people before, and talked of a desire to take bodily parts as sick souvenirs.

A parent of a child who attended the same school as her said her odd behaviour meant she had few friends.

'It was common knowledge from 2020 that she had a 'kill list' of kids she wanted to kill,' he said.

'My daughter came home and told me about it, but no one took it seriously. Girl X tried to recruit other children to take part in blood rituals with her, everyone just thought she was weird and a fantasist.

'You won't find a single student that liked her.'

Giving evidence, the girl admitted she had self-harmed since the age of 12, which she said was a 'coping mechanism' for dealing with anxiety.

Exact moment will be made clear in court

The judge says she will state in court on the day of sentencing the exact moment when the restrictions no longer apply.
Until then, the restrictions remain in force.

Is anyone else bored of hearing this sort of statement time and time again after a murder has taken place? Maybe we should take things like this more seriously, maybe if something seems OFF we should report it to the relevant authorities. JMO.

I imagine Girl X wants to be named. Obsessed famous killers herself, she will likely want the notoriety
