Found Deceased UK - Caroline Everest, 18, Sheffield, 22 Nov 2015

Yes, IF she was drunk & by herself, she'd be a lot more vulnerable especially at that time of the morning. There's some people out there that unfortunately take advantage of people in that sort of state. She also might have made decisions that she wouldn't normally make when sober. We've nearly all been there & done it.

She could have got lost & been offered a ride?

Either way, accident or a crime, it's so sad [emoji17]

I think she has been picked up in a car. Could even be someone she knew, or a 'false' minicab.

All IMO - but it reads as if she was a sensible girl and I fear someone has taken advantage of a young woman on her own late at night with the most dire consequences.

So wicked. imo..

Yes, I'm afraid I think that's the most likely too.

If it was suspicious would they leave the scene as quick as they have ? I don't know about this. I think there will be no suspicious circumstances. Still tragic :(

I know, im in two minds.. Looking at the height of the railings, I find it hard to believe she accidentally fell over them & in to the river.. But on the other hand, they left the scene really quickly!

Hopefully there were no suspicious circumstances. Still tragic, but makes it less tragic than if a crime had occurred.

@DaveHiggensPA: The Porter Brook - where the body was found - is not much more than a stream at this point https://t.co/URNEtyk51O

This doesn't look like a place you could "fall" into, or would choose to "end it all". If she was a male I might say she was relieving himself and drunkenly slipped in the water as in the Shane Montgomery case out of PA last year. I don't think she got here herself. I'm going with foul play.

I think for me, suspicion is raised more because of the location of the stream. Lost or not, she grew up in the city, she knew the basics at the very least. Stumbling out of a club and taking a wrong turn or two - yep, I see that. But then crossing a busy dual carriageway, past a supermarket and a petrol station (neither of which should be on her route home) along with other significant buildings... no matter how drunk surely you'd know you'd gone wrong. And then turning off onto a darkened side street and ended up in a stream with high enough railings not to fall over?? I'm not saying it has to be foul play, but I struggle to accept she just got lost. She may, however, have being trying to get somewhere else, lots of student accom round there. Her phone should show whether she made arrangements to go visit someone after the club.

You look at all the York cases and can totally see how they ended up in the Ouse. It's a big, deep, fast river with no railings. It cuts through the city so many people have to cross it after a night out. I understand how a drunk person can tumble in there, sadly it happens all too often. But this is something different and feels wrong. Just my opinion, obvs.

They'd know if she was stabbed, shot, strangled, beaten. If I was American I'd be saying my hinky meter's going off.

I suppose we've just got to wait for confirmation either way, but even if they say it's just a tragic accident I will forever wonder what on earth she was doing in that area. It just seems unlikely for her to have got all that way without realising she wasn't heading home. The good news is there will be CCTV and witnesses if she walked along those dual carriageways, somebody must have driven past her even at that hour in the morning.
I'm American and will do the honors for you MY HINKY METER IS GOING NUTS.

If you're laying face down in it you can drown in very little water
True. An ex boyfriend of mine did just that. He was extremely intoxicated and drowned in what amounted to be a puddle of water.

Today, a large area around the scene was cordoned off by police with uniformed officers guarding a number of entry points.

Police search teams could be seen scouring the banks of the Porter Brook, which is about 10ft wide at this point and little more than a stream.

The body was found in part of the brook between a large area of derelict land and a flats complex, just off the city's busy inner ring road and very close to Ecclesall Road - one of Sheffield's main arteries.

The scene is about half-a-mile from the Corporation club in an area of offices, flats and car showrooms between the city centre and one of the main student residential areas.

So what's everyone's thoughts as to what happened then? Foul play, suicide or an accident? X

It has happened a few times in the Kingston on Thames area too. River Thames, a lot of it with no barriers and, frankly, easy to fall in to. Deep and strong currents, also a student area.

This with Caroline is not the same at all. This in Sheffield seems a derelict area full of shrubbery. I expect foul play sadly.

ETA = Would add I think it possibly happened elsewhere, and this was a quiet, solitary place to leave her sadly. IMO

Police would have mentioned foul play by now surely. I think quite a lot of river deaths we read about could be suicides - I think some of these people have had suicidal thoughts but finally get the bottle to do it when they've had a few drinks. Mind you this doesn't look like a river you'd end it all in so I think she slipped and fell and died of hypothermia.

Inquest will reveal more, until then rumours are being taken with a pinch of salt by me.

Regarding the slipping in though, what's your thoughts on the railings being around waist high?

Yes we will find out soon enough, I wonder if they'll be an update later today like what was said in an earlier article I read. Patiently waiting!!

The two cities I hear about most are York and Durham, both are beautiful historical "small" cities with a high ratio of young students and a large river right in the centre. I found an article about a new campaign called "Don't Drink & Drown" (backed by Megan Roberts mum). Here's the article, I know several of us followed Megan's case, and Euan's. And not to mention all the other people who have drowned in the Ouse and the Wear, the article is only about the six young students.

And there is a new case - Rory Johnson in York - he went missing this weekend too.

Tributes to student Caroline Everest after body is discovered in stream near nightclub

A post mortem and formal identification were due to be carried out this afternoon but police said they believed the body to be that of Caroline.

The brook where the body was found is 10ft wide with a waist high fence running along it.

The area was heavily cordoned off this morning nearby streets closed for several as police officers combed the riverbank and searched surrounding bushes and woodland.

I'm going for she fell in somewhere else and drifted up stream to that spot. May have even been in that part that runs underground for a while and why she wasn't spotted until today.

I'm wondering if they can test blood alcohol levels after someone's been in the water for 2 days.

This is very sad news. :( Rest in peace, Caroline.

I hate walking alone at night in Sheffield, and I do not go to Corporation any more for quite a few reasons; one being that I didn't like the bouncers on the doors at all.

Sheffield Hallam University has partnered up with a local taxi firm (https://www.hallamstudentsunion.com/advice_help/crimeandsafety/safetaxischeme/) - you hand your student card to the driver and pick it up and pay your fare at a university building 48 hours later. I think it's a great idea to keep people safe!

I think she may have went into the bushes for a wee and slipped.

Don't want to go O/T here CoverMeCagney, but sounds so similar to these areas. Students, clubs, nights out, accidental drownings.
