I'm thinking Foul play but I think I need more information on this I can not see it being suicide why walk all that way just to chuck your self in the shallow end of a river

I think she may have went into the bushes for a wee and slipped.

But IF the railing is running all alongside the stream, how did she manage to slip when having a wee & fall over a waist high railing? That's what im confused about about this case [emoji17] If it wasn't running all alongside it, it is definitely a possibility that that's what happened. Ive only seen a couple of pictures of this stream, & it appeared to have a high railing around it.

Guess we will just have to wait for the update. X

I don't think it was suicide at all. I just had to throw it in there as a possible scenario.

This is very sad news. :( Rest in peace, Caroline.

I hate walking alone at night in Sheffield, and I do not go to Corporation any more for quite a few reasons; one being that I didn't like the bouncers on the doors at all.

Sheffield Hallam University has partnered up with a local taxi firm (https://www.hallamstudentsunion.com/advice_help/crimeandsafety/safetaxischeme/) - you hand your student card to the driver and pick it up and pay your fare at a university building 48 hours later. I think it's a great idea to keep people safe!

Ah ha, a local!!

What's your take on the area Caroline was found in? I know there is student accom out that way, would it be typical for students to walk home if they lived there? Is that loop road likely to be busy, is Waitrose lit up at night?

I can only try to compare it with Leeds where I was at Uni but I don't know Sheffield well enough to get a good picture having only ever been to the shops (and also Gatecrasher in the 90's).

I climbed into plenty of gardens to go for a wee when I was a teenager. I think she maybe went into the undergrowth for a bit of privacy but slipped.

I don't know the area too well, but I wouldn't say it was unusual for students to walk home that way as there are a huge number of student flats in that area. However, I wouldn't like to think I was walking there on my own but I'm like 5'0" and easily frightened!
Ecclesall Road is quite a busy road in Sheffield and I imagine there is still some traffic passing through at night, though the side streets would be quiet as that area mostly has business properties which would be empty at that time, and you probably wouldn't bump into anyone unless they were drunken revellers too. Not sure about the Waitrose, sorry!

I haven't really decided whether or not I think this was foul play or just a tragic accident. People do silly things when they are drunk and are not aware of what could go wrong. It has been damp and frosty in Sheffield over the past few days, so I could easily see people slipping on icy patches (or wet grass); I doubt the pavements are gritted in these areas.

I know that it was cold in the early hours of Sunday morning I do believe intoxicated or not that cold would have bothered her it's not June or August it is November!! Your gonna feel that cold without a coat - a taxi should have been safer suitable option for where she needed to go

We've presumed that because Carrie was local that she shouldn't have headed that way but what if it actually worked in her favour. What if??? Because she's local she knew it was a secluded spot where she wouldn't necessarily be found...

Tributes to student Caroline Everest after body is discovered in stream near nightclub

A post mortem and formal identification were due to be carried out this afternoon but police said they believed the body to be that of Caroline.

The brook where the body was found is 10ft wide with a waist high fence running along it.

The area was heavily cordoned off this morning nearby streets closed for several as police officers combed the riverbank and searched surrounding bushes and woodland.

The fact that they were searching in bushes etc makes me think she was found w/o her purse or phone, or maybe her shoes or some piece of clothing were missing. And that makes me think it might have been an attack.

RIP Caroline! Gone too soon.

I agree. There seem to be lot of these cases on here lately.

It's the first thing I think when I hear someone's missing after a night out - how far is the river? Sad but true. I would rather Caroline's death was an awful accident she knew nothing about. Better that than she was attacked, or lay injured through the night. I hope the PM results are clear enough to know for certain how she died.

Cags this time last night i did not even think of the river, in this case because where she was last seen or even her journey home from the club there was no river she had to cross - it's just strange how it's turned out to be another death in a river

and the the list is getting bigger now it's becoming a regular accurance students it seems to be a lot of students that goes out drinking goes missing - later found in a river it sort of happening all over the world there is cases to point towards accidental because big chances that's the case with alcohol involved!! but there is a large amount of cases where the authorities don't want to admit that they can not work out how that person ended up in a river

If it was foul play, I would have expected the police to put something out by now, and I also think the cordons being removed suggest they didn't find that area suspicious.

I see red flags all over it. She was a local to Sheffield. The club and halls of residence are both in the city centre around major landmarks that anyone in Sheffield would know (The Crucible, the O2 arena). I find it hard to believe she was drunk enough to go that far in the wrong direction, especially with that busy road (presumably an underpass there?). The location of the body is a very strange place to fall in. My initial fear was that the body went in further west, either around the cemetery or further west around a park area...but I didn't know then which way the brook ran (now someone has said it is west to east). But, despite the heavy rains of late the part where the body was found doesn't look deep enough to carry a body that far.

Where would Caroline head for (in the wrong direction) without giving someone a call to make sure they were still awake? I don't think she was going on to a house party alone. She looks more like me, the sort who'd have three drinks and appear a wobbly but hit the fresh, cold air outside and maybe sit on the side of the road for ten minutes and that would be sober enough to realise how cold it is and wobble off home...yes maybe go a street or two in the wrong direction, or more likely walk straight past your home and have to double back.

I might find it easier to understand if she'd headed off to her parents place, but it doesn't seem to be in that direction. Maybe her sister lives that side of Sheffield and she wanted to see her and knew it would be okay to turn up at 3 am?

Whatever happened, her family has lost a lovely girl for no good reason at way too young an age! If it's not foul play that means there's not an attacker on the loose, so that would be a good thing from that perspective.

Amonet. I agree with every word. Even if she died accidentally it might still be a mystery why she was even there.

I still think there will be plenty of CCTV footage of her IF she walked from A to B.

Almost embarrassed to say I've never been that drunk, but don't you sober up if you walk? Wouldn't the alcohol wear off that way?

Caroline may well have been quite sober, but even a glass or two of wine can have a strong effect on someone not used to it.

What are the chances, quite drunk (and I doubt if she was) that someone would accidently fall into that river at that point?
Quite minimal imo.

Just walking doesn't help sober you up unfortunately. Once the alcohol is in your body it's in there and needs to work it's way out. Depending on how drunk/intoxicated you are, the longer it takes to sober up.

In my younger (wilder) days, I recall being very drunk on a couple of occasions and even though I managed to walk my way home from quite a distance I still woke up the next morning drunk. Yuck. Got to remember that if you are really that drunk, sometimes it's not just possible to walk at all. Yuck again.

Just for comparison, in the Sian O'Callaghan case, Sian disappeared after leaving a club in the early hours of 19 March 2011. It wasn't till 24 March that police put out the description of the taxi that had picked her up, and it was found and her killer arrested on the same day. However they had had him under surveillance in the meantime, hoping that he would lead them to Sian who had not been found. Once arrested, he eventually disclosed where he had hidden her body.
Since Caroline has now been found, we should hear something soon IF she was picked up by someone and it has been caught on CCTV.

Do we know who said that she was last seen heading to the staff room in the club? I know it's on the appeals posted on facebook but I can't work out where the info came from and if there isn't even a staff room why would somebody say there was. I'm assuming the police have found on CCTV when she left the club anyway so what purpose would that bit of misinformation serve?

Just seen another teen is missing believed to be with an older man. Not sure how to start a thread if there isn't one already

Fears grow for missing schoolgirl, 15, thought to have vanished with older man after telling her family she was going to stay with a friend two days ago

A missing schoolgirl who vanished from her home two days ago is feared to be with an older man.
Lauren Cannon, 15, has not been seen since she left her home in Brentwood, Essex, at 7pm on Monday evening.
She had said she was going to stay with a friend, but her worried family have not heard from her since.
And they revealed that since Lauren went missing an unknown man had called her school, pretending to be her father.

I assume it was probably a room with "staff only" on the door or something, hence the confusion. Could just be a small office or something rather than an official staff room.

I wonder if we'll get PM results today?
