Two men found dead in canal in the space of three days

Those recent deaths are very unusual. Both times somebody reported concern for the welfare of both men. Swimming in canals etc round here isn't unusual and sadly does result in deaths, but swimming in minus degree weather? It's bitter in Manchester at the moment. How sad.

Greater Manchester police say they are continuing the search for missing student Charley Gadd remains ‘ongoing’ - almost a month after his disappearance.

The 20-year-old vanished after a night out in Manchester on Saturday 11 December and his family issued an urgent appeal for help in tracing his whereabouts.

I was only thinking about Charley this morning. A very strange case, although I do think he will eventually be found in the canal. So many young men lost to the water after nights out both in the UK and the US, it's so unbelievably sad.

I check every morning first thing for any update. They seemed convinced he had gone into the water, yet we have not heard how this was established, ie witness sighting, CCTV etc.

There have been cases where canals and rivers are searched yet nothing found, then months later remains are located in either the same vicinity or not a great distance from where last seen.

A force spokesman said a body found in Manchester Ship Canal at about 11:30 GMT had not been formally identified, but was thought to be Mr Gadd.

Mr Gadd's family have been informed.

The spokesman said there were not thought to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding the death.
