In France? He must have used a passport then, so couldn't police have traced him earlier?

Given the lack of bank card use and the possible sighting near a seafront (both from posts upthread), could this be that he’s actually gone into the water from England and washed up on a French shore? How likely or not is that?

Very likely, I would have said.

Yes, probably. I am not sure where the tides go? I do remember throwing a bottle in the sea at Westgate next door to Margate when I was a child, and that washed up at Stavanger in Norway.

I wonder where he was found, if we will hear.

Police Statement.

Yesterday (18 January) we were informed by Interpol that the body of a man had been discovered on a beach in northern France.

Formal identity has not been confirmed, however the family of a Canterbury man in his 30s have been informed.

He was reported missing in August 2021, having last been seen in Margate.

We are grateful to everyone who responded to our earlier appeals for information.

From above link

Dan's dad, Jason Joiner, has told KentOnline that his son's body is believed to have been found on a French beach about five months ago, shortly after his disappearance.

The family of a man 'missing' for five months are after answers from authorities after it emerged he had been found dead a week after disappearing.

An extensive police investigation saw officers also scour east Kent - sending up a helicopter on at least two occasions after possible sightings of Dan.

But it is now understood he was discovered dead on a beach in northern France just seven days after he was last seen.

His father, Jason Joiner, says it is unclear why it took so long for his son to be identified, adding: “It’s unbelievable. Hopefully we’ll get some answers.”

KentOnline understands Dan’s body was found about five miles from Calais on August 21.

But it was not until last Wednesday evening - 152 days after he is said to have been discovered - that Dan’s heartbroken family were informed, following DNA tests that revealed his identity.

That is disgraceful. All that time while family and friends were vainly still hoping and searching.

The bereaved family of a much-loved musician are hoping to finally lay him to rest more than 10 months after his death.

Dan Venes, 31, who lived off Sturry Road in Canterbury, went missing in Margate on August 14 last year, sparking a wide-scale search by police, friends and family.

Canterbury man Daniel Venes was a popular musician

An inquest has this week revealed Dan’s body was discovered on August 28, just a fortnight after his disappearance, when it is understood he was found on a beach in France.

But it took considerable time for his body to be identified.

For more than five months, his heartbroken loved ones were not aware he had been found and continued to fruitlessly search for him.

It wasn’t until January 19 this year that his family were informed Dan’s body had been discovered last summer, about five miles from Calais.

As an inquest opened in Maidstone on Tuesday, it was revealed a post-mortem examination was unable to establish how he died.

Coroner Bina Patel confirmed that Dan was identified through dental records, but a pathologist ruled the cause of his death as “unascertained”.

Dan’s father, Jason Joiner, says it is hoped a date will soon be set for Dan’s funeral, now his body has been repatriated to the UK.

Mr Joiner, from Swalecliffe, previously described his son – who has thousands of followers on Facebook pages exhibiting his art and music – as a “brilliant” guitar player and “a lovely, caring person”.

Prior to his disappearance, Dan is believed to have been picked up at Sturry Railway Station by police due to concerns for his welfare.

He was taken to the QEQM hospital in Margate, but is thought to have left soon after.

[...]

A full inquest - which hopes to establish the circumstances surrounding Dan’s death -is due to take place at County Hall on October 3.
