"It is believed the widowed great-grandmother disturbed intruders who attacked before making off with just £200.
Mrs Hughes was found by her daughter on the floor of the house she'd lived in for 50 years with severe facial injuries and in a pool of her own blood.''

''Despite nationwide interviews and television appeals, a £100,000 reward and a distinctive footprint left at the scene, police have never caught anyone for the sickening crime.
A hooded male seen near the house on the night of the murder is still to be traced, as well as a couple in a people carrier who may have spoken to the man.''
"She was absolutely fantastic with such a love of life, someone who had a tough life but never complained. She was the perfect storybook grandmother."
''Claire told how relatives considered whether Elsie should continue to live alone following a distraction burglary in which her life savings were stolen.''

''There are a number of lines of inquiry we are pursuing. One of the main ones is looking at the connection between a visit to the address by tree loppers in July last year.
"There is then a distraction burglary at the address on August 15 last year and that was followed by the murder on September 8 last year.
"Elsie lived at her home in Hawarden Road for 50 years without having any troubles and yet within two months of these three incidents she was dead.
"The inquiry is looking at what, if anything, connects these three events.''

''He is believed to have been in a takeaway restaurant nearby earlier on in the evening and is thought to have spoken to a couple outside the Kowloon House in Hawarden Road.
The police renewed their appeal for the couple seen in a people carrier parked outside the takeaway on Hawarden Road to speak to officers immediately.
Officers think they could hold information which could assist in the search for the man they want to question.
"We are repeating our appeal for this couple to come forward as it is possible they may have significant information which could further assist in the inquiry," said Detective Chief Superintendent Ross Duffield who is leading the inquiry.''
"We have sightings of the people carrier parked on the same side of the road as the take away and it is later seen to drive off in the direction of Hope.''

''At a Press conference at Wrexham Police Station detectives handed out pictures of the footwear they believe the killer was wearing.
Detectives recovered footprints from Mrs Hughes’ Abermorddu council home and have now displayed the expensive Nike trainers which they say made them.''

''The footprints from a Nike Court Tradition trainer were found at Mrs Hughes’ home on September 8, 2005.

“The prints recovered by forensic experts were left by a person wearing a pair of similar training shoes between sizes seven to nine,” said DCI Anderson.

We know this particular type of shoe had been on the market for some time in the UK. The body of all this kind of training shoe manufactured was white, however, they had various colour Nike emblems upon them - so the colour of the symbol and wording may indeed have been different from the pair pictured.

“I’m asking people to think back to the time and to ask themselves if they knew someone with a similar training shoe or if they bought a pair of trainers as a present for someone.

I’m particularly keen to speak to people who may have noticed that the trainers suddenly went missing around the time of Elsie’s death - or simply that they were never worn again by the person in question.”

''NIKE Court Tradition trainers are a popular tennis style foot-wear in a contemporary design.
Currently there are about 30 different trainers within the range for men, women, boys and girls.
They carry the distinctive squiggle on the sole with prices ranging between £16 for an infants shoe to £70 for a top of the range adult trainer.''
