A jury has retired to consider its verdicts in the trial of a plastic surgeon accused of attempting to murder his colleague...

The jury has also been asked not to speculate about the reason Brooks has been absent from his three-week trial.

There was cross-examination of some of the prosecution's witnesses - the court appointed an advocate to question the victim Graeme Perks and others about their evidence.

The judge also urged the jury to assess the prosecution's case with a critical eye - they were asked to consider an argument that Brooks acted in self-defence. [...]

That would make this case unusual enough, but what makes it even more so, is the background which we can only now report. [...]

There were no less than nine dates set for the trial, and on five occasions, Brooks sacked his legal teams. [...]

In an extraordinary development, towards the very end of the trial, Brooks unexpectedly appeared by video link from prison.

Still refusing to accept food, he appeared weak and chose to lie on the floor while addressing Mr Justice Pepperall.

I didn't consider that a hunger strike was why he wasn't in court. I assumed that he was out in bail due to how long it's been since the crime, and he'd done a runner.

Wonder why the reporting restrictions during trial.

I'm glad the court put its foot down and went ahead without him. Enough is enough!

Now throw away the key please judge. I wonder if he was charged with any crimes towards Graeme's wife and son.

"Brooks, formerly of Landseer Road, Southwell, said his autism may have made it more likely that he went on hunger strike and added that someone in hospital said he “may be suffering from anorexia”.

Ms Ayling responded to Brooks’ submissions and said he was “manipulating the court process”, and that the court had “bent over backwards” to maintain his rights in the trial.

The judge agreed to adjourn the trial for 48 hours for Brooks to give evidence, but he became upset and said he was “not well enough” to do so at short notice.

The court heard he “asked to be taken back to his cell” and refused to participate further in proceedings.

Mr Justice Pepperall ruled that on “no fewer than eight occasions” since 2021 Brooks had “used hunger strikes or the threat of some other self-harm to achieve some advantage”."

Sentencing is on June 3rd.

Brooks is an attention seeker and manipulator. How he managed to practice medicine is beyond me. Jmo, moo

"It can now be reported that Brooks was never seen by the jury, repeatedly refusing to engage with the trial.

In a legal saga stretching from his arrest, during a coronavirus lockdown, to his conviction, a judge outlined the "extraordinary" case, labelling Brooks a "highly intelligent" man who used hunger strikes and sacking his lawyers as tactics to try to manipulate the system to avoid justice."

"Brooks was facing an online NHS disciplinary hearing, which started on 11 January 2021.

The court heard the burns specialist "hated" Mr Perks, who was a witness against him in those disciplinary proceedings."

Brooks was supposed to be sentenced today. I can't find anything on it.

It wouldn't surprise me if Brooks has managed to delay his sentencing just like his trial.
