Police asked Stewart to consent to a further search of house

There was also further conversations about press conferences to encourage public response into Helen’s disappearance, Dc Daines told jurors. When she saw Stewart she said he sat in the lounge and looked tired.

“He was asked to sign a consent form for us to search the house. We wanted to look for further electrical items that Helen might have used, perhaps a few that Stewart didn’t know of.

“He asked us how finding those devices would help the enquiry. We said it might, and we were looking for the boxes the devices came in.”

Stewart 'started to ask lots of questions about police search and became upset'

DC Daines continued: “As we were having that conversation scenes of crime photographers arrived at the door.

“Stewart asked me if the search was going to be taking place that day, we said it would be best to do it sooner rather than later. “He started to ask a lot of questions, specifically what we were going to be searching for.

“He said he was getting fed up with all this now. We explained again the reasons why we wanted to search the house, and he said ‘you keep saying it’s the last time’.

He became upset, his breathing increased and he began rubbing his forehead.

“He appeared to be anxious and uncomfortable with what we were asking of him.

“My colleague tried to reassure him.”

Stewart tells police: 'You won't find anything in the garage'

“He said if ‘Helen does come back, I don’t want to be with her anymore’.

“I took that in the context of what he was going through.

“He went on to say that ‘you won’t find anything in the garage, if anywhere, devices will be in the house’.

“We’d spoken that searches would be conducted in the garage and the house. He continued to air concern about officers searching the house, saying he didn’t see what good it would do.

“We had concern as to his psychical condition, I tried to calm him down. “Stewart said he did not consent to the search taking place.”

More police arrived and Stewart assisted

Dc Daines adds: “My colleague made a phone call ready to make a search, but since consent was denied police did not start the search. In the meantime I spoke to Stewart, I spoke about his health, he told me about the fact a journalist had knocked on his door, but that didn’t seem to concern me too much.

“He spoke about a note that at one stage we thought had been written by Helen. It transpired to be his own note.

“Technical officers arrived at the house and Stewart assisted, saying where devices might be in the house.”

Stewart 'did not seem happy about officers going into the garage'

“Officers requested access to the garage, and as they asked for that, Stewart didn’t seem happy about them going to the garage. “He did go and get a key to let them in.

“Stewart’s parents came in the house and we had conversations with them.

“At some point we were in Stewart’s office. He asked if police had lifted the floorboards at the Broadstairs address.

“I said I didn’t think they had, and asked him why he had asked this.

“He said one appeared to be broken and there were a few gaps in the floorboards, he asked if this was the police, and whether opening up floorboards was the standard practice.

“After this conversation took place he was much more calmer.”

Stewart told police "Helen would be in a rental cottage near Broadstairs." Court told he had concerns about giving his mob phone to police.

Stewart later emailed police telling them that he had lost his mobile phone. Police never got the phone.

Court told there had been two failed attempts to log in to Helen Bailey's online accounts. One was at 19:58 on 11th April

my comment - so he's at the bowls competition but still trying to get into the account !

'Stewart did not want to give up his mobile'

“The photographers were leaving, and after that Stewart told my colleague that he believed Helen was in the area of Broadstairs. “He said she thought Helen would be in a rental cottage ‘somewhere’ in Broadstairs, as this was the area she likes.

“As we were leaving a health professional turned up.

“He aired concern about handing over his phone, saying this was his only lifeline to Helen and his mental support team.

“He didn’t want to give up his mobile phone at that stage.”

Tx. he's coming across as a rat caught in a trap today.
HB might note in the margins of IS's tale : "author, your plot-line development and characters need some work - barely plausible"

Stewart tells police he has lost his mobile phone

On June 15, Dc Daines said there was conversation via email, again Stewart was telling us he needed his mobile phone.

He responded on June 17 by email, and said ‘Whilst I was transferring to O2 was carrying two phones. I lost my old phone, I don’t even know the number of the SIM. According to the ‘find my phone’ app, it’s off, I’m sure it will turn up’ he told us.

“He said the last place he remembers having his phone was in Cambridge.

“We never got that phone.”

Dc Daines is cross-examined

“We were then told Stewart was regarded as a suspect.”

Dc Daines is now being cross examined. She admits that Stewart’s phone had been looked at by police on April 20. She said that on April 22, a dog search took place of the house and the garage area. She said she had likely told Stewart that it was always the last person who saw the missing person that was considered a suspect.

c Daines said when Stewart was asked if he would do a third interview, he told officers that he would only be repeating himself. “Me and my colleague both felt he was not mentally or psychically fit to continue to provide an interview at that time,” she said.

Court told Stewart told police he was getting "fed up" with all the searches. He found them "intrusive"

Stewart was getting Chinese takeway when one attempt was made to log into Ms Bailey's account

Dc Daines said she was made aware that one of the attempts to log into Helen’s bank accounts was at 7.58pm on April 11. She is then shown CCTV on the evening of April 11, showing that Stewart was at the bowls club at 6pm, and getting a Chinese takeaway at 8pm

Dc Daines evidence finished. Court takes a short break

DC Daines is now being re-examined by the prosecution. She said that on April 22, Stewart was looking out towards the back of the house and the garage area when officers were searching. She said she was with him inside the house. That’s the end of Dc Daines evidence. There will now be a mid morning break, until 12noon.

I think Tara or the court have misquoted on timing there.

The log in attempt was 19.58 ...... IS is shown at the Chinese takeaway at 20.49

So he could easily have been logging in while at the bowls competition, or even in his car, before he left the bowls and drove to the Chinese takeaway in Royston ( 30 minute journey Cambridge to Royston approx )

That's a red herring. It's perfectly possible for IS to have logged into HB's bank account on either of the two conveniently lost mobile phones, his or hers, from anywhere.

Sorry Tara, that should have been 8.49pm, when Stewart was seen on CCTV getting a Chinese takeaway.

Court is in session

We’re back up and running now. The judge is clarifying that the date on which Stewart was declared a suspect was on June 27, 2016, but Dc Hollie Daines wasn’t informed of this until the following day.
