The man who was wrongly convicted of killing TV presenter Jill Dando has appeared in court charged with raping and indecently assaulting a teenager.

Barry George appeared at the Old Bailey via videolink from Ireland today, accompanied by a family member, accused of attacking the 14-year-old girl almost 40 years ago.

The 65-year-old would have been aged 27 at the time.

[…]

He is charged with one count of rape and two counts of indecently assaulting the same girl in the west London borough of Hammersmith and Fulham in September 1987.

Prosecutor Kate Bex KC said George will also face a fourth count of attempted rape - an alternative to the rape charge - when he is asked to enter pleas at a future hearing.

Interesting. I wonder why this has taken nearly 40 years to come to trial? New DNA evidence perhaps? Why is it at The Old Bailey? Is it because the alleged crime was in West London? So many questions...
Actually, since the above article is not directly linked to Jill Dando, would/should there be another "case/page"?

Why is it at The Old Bailey?
I think the Old Bailey does a lot of cases from different parts of London and even from different parts of the UK. Rumpole of the Bailey did a lot of cases there from different parts of London....................

Completely agree I have always believed he had done this crime and this further shows he is not a harmless man as some claim.

'Detectives are probing a Serbian assassin over Jill Dando's unsolved murder, the Daily Mirror can reveal. The Metropolitan Police said in a statement today that it is assessing evidence published during our investigation into Jill's 1999 shooting. This includes a newly unearthed picture of convicted double-killer Milorad Ulemek wearing an unusual tie that matches one worn by a man caught on CCTV who is still wanted. The Met said: "No unsolved murder is ever closed and detectives are assessing this information to understand whether it’s a new and realistic line of enquiry.” Cold case officers are set to examine the raw footage of the unidentified man, who was caught on camera on the gunman's likely escape route around 20 minutes after the Crimewatch presenter, 37, was shot.'
''Certified forensic video analyst Emi Polito has compiled a report for the Daily Mirror comparing the two garments. Mr Polito found the most "significant" similarity between them is a number of dark tones in the light stripes of Man X's tie which appear to mirror Ulemek's.

Other similarities were the "general form and style", the appearance of it under the knot and three dark stripes which are "broadly similar size and tone". Mr Polito said his detailed examination "lends moderate support" to the contention that they are the same "type and design".

I'm glad the police are investigating still anyways and well I've always been sure it was likely Barry George I've never ruled out the idea of some kind of Assassination from someone else and the Serbia connection has always been thrown around so it makes sense but it's scary to think that the possible motive for her killing was just because she presented some news report on it scary stuff.

That tie looks more black than blue and is of a pretty generic style.

I’m still at about 98% that Barry George did this.

Interesting that the police are looking at the Serbian angle again, just as BG is charged with these offences. For what it's worth, I'm very much in the 'Barry George didn't do it' camp. The killing of Jill Dando was a cold, clinical, ruthless, brutal execution. Jump out, push down, scream, bang, walk off - in not much longer than the time it took to read that. Somebody who could barely function as a member of society isn't my idea of a ruthlessly efficient hitman.

Anyway, doesn't the rape charge for BG present us with a problem on this thread, as the matter is now sub judice, which means that not only that we shouldn't be anticipating the verdict in the rape case by speculating on his guilt or innocence, but also that we shouldn't mention any previous convictions, or speculating that the accused might be guilty of other crimes!

I think everyone will accept that Barry George is/was a serious sexual offender. That doesn't make him the assassin of Jill Dando. The manner of the killing has always seemed to me to be a professional job. I believe we will find out soon, who pulled that trigger, and it won't be Barry George.

Well that's going to throw a few people into a quandary. But it all seems a bit vague. Where is this CCTV footage from exactly? As a trained assassin, why would they do a 'hit' so cleanly, but then go running off in a blind panic as some witnesses have claimed? And the biggest one, why would they assassinate her? Yes, she fronted a TV campaign, but it's not as if she personally was the voice behind it - plus by never admitting to it, nor even alluding to it, what did the paymasters behind it actually achieve? When Ross McWhirter was assassinated by the IRA, it was because he had been very vocal in his politics - and the IRA were quick to own up as a warning. But with Jill Dando....nothing.

I have no experience in espionage so I am only speculating but I would assume that a State Supported Entity would normally only carry out a “sanctioned hit” if it had operational value; ie some advantage was gained. A Presenter, who just read a script that was handed to her would hardly qualify. A deranged listener, who really didn’t like what she said on screen, might not understand the nuances of her role in the News Reporting process. Those types usually don’t have the resources to act on their anger.
