“Them” could imply a husband & wife, a mother & son, parents & son etc etc I’d refer to all of my neighbours as “them” even though each have different set ups
I agree. I also think some people would say 'them' if they didn't know if it was a 'him', 'her' or more than one person.
So if you were to say 'he keeps himself to himself' that carries the implication a single male lives there. But you don't know if it might be three women who live there, so some people would instead switch to the colloquial of they/them.
