UK - Kamil Leszczynski, 33, found murdered in field, Bedfordshire, 1 July 2021 *arrests*

  • #21
The press conference on the 8th said they arrested a man late the previous evening, which would be the 7th.

Shouldn't they have charged or released by now? I wish there was an update.

  • #22
They get 24 hours, but with a serious crime they can apply to extend their time to 36 hours, and then once again to 96. So if he was arrested on the evening of the 7th, they have until tomorrow evening if we assume that those extensions have been given. If they charge there will undoubtedly be a news release on the force website.

Being arrested: your rights

From the article above, I thought this was interesting

“We are keen to speak to anyone who knew Kamil, had knowledge of his whereabouts in the lead up to July 1, or if you have any knowledge of the fields where his body was found."

They want to speak to anyone who knows about the field?

I've tried to add a Google maps image to show how out of the way these villages are, but my phone won't let me. This isn't a shortcut anywhere, it's very secluded.

Also it seems that the two latest people arrested have both been released.

Do you think they're trying to prompt people who may not realise they are witnesses to come forward? Perhaps they have reason to think that Kamil's body was moved there at a time when there must have been people (e.g. dog walkers) around, and the supposition is that witnesses may have dismissed what they saw as agricultural work going on or something.

Just speculating.

Yes maybe! I know when they did the roadblocks they were asking for witnesses from the Wednesday 30th June and Thursday 1st July. The implication being, in my reading, that they think he was elsewhere on the 27th-29th June.

I did ask the local paper to push for more information on the CCTV. Which cameras picked him up, where did they lose him, what was he wearing? I've had no response.

I haven't been keeping up, sorry. What's the significance of the 27-29th? Is it that he hadn't been seen since the 27th?

Yes that's my understanding from the reports. Kamil was last seen on CCTV on Sunday 27th June at around 10.00am in Wellingborough. His body was found on the 1st July in Bedfordshire.

OK, well that is interesting then, you're right.

I guess either it's a reflection of what they know to be the case (i.e. where he was in that time frame) or a reflection of what they know not to be the case (i.e. he wasn't in the fields).

How I read this is that the post mortem has established that death occurred on or about the 27th. So there'd be no point in appealing for public sightings of Kamil after that time. But there may be witnesses to the body deposition, even if people aren't aware that that's what they saw.

I wonder if there was some kind of agricultural process going on in the fields that week that means they can say with certainty that his body was not there up to and including the 29th? Perhaps they feel that if they can get habitual users of the fields to come forward, they can jog their memory with that information (e.g. that was the day after the crop sprayers had been through, or whatever).

That's the best I can come up with at the moment!

Thanks for your reply, it's so interesting to hear another point of view on this. I think the police did say they were trying to establish his whereabouts for the whole period, but were only asking drivers in Carlton about the 30th and 1st. You're right though, they must have an idea of when he died within that time frame from the autopsy.

I don't know who found the body, but if it was someone who regularly walked that way then maybe they knew he wasn't there the day before?

I've tried to put together all the information from all the different articles. I hope I haven't missed anything.

1st July - at 4.30pm a body is found in a field off Carlton /Turvey Road in Bedfordshire.

5th July - Bedfordshire police announce murder enquiry

Det Ch Insp Rob Hall said officers were "working hard to establish the full circumstances leading up to this death".

"We know that people may go walking in these fields and we would urge anyone who has been in this area over the past week or so to come forward," he said.

"We are also asking people who may have been driving along Carlton Road into Turvey Road, or used a layby or garage in the surrounding area, on Wednesday or Thursday (30 June or 1 July) to share their dashcam footage with us, as it could contain something helpful for our investigation."

7th July - Kamil's name is released to the public. He lived at Knox Road in Wellingborough, has been in the UK for 10 years and has no family here.

Detective Chief Inspector Rob Hall, who is leading the investigation, said: “Our thoughts are with the victim’s family and friends at this difficult time.

“We are working to establish his movements leading up to 1 July, and we are extremely keen to speak to anyone who knew Kamil, or saw in him in the days before.

“No matter how short your sighting or conversation was, I would encourage you to please get in touch.”

8th July - Police announce a Northamptonshire man has been arrested and roadblocks are set up on Carlton / Turvey Road to question drivers.

DS Simmons said: “We have made one arrest late yesterday evening, and a male is currently in custody at a police station in Bedfordshire, and we have a number of searches underway in Bedfordshire and Northamptonshire at this time.”

The last known sighting of Kamil was on CCTV in Wellingborough at around 10am on Sunday, June 27.

We are working to establish his movements leading up to 1 July, and we are extremely keen to speak to anyone who knew Kamil, or saw in him in the days before.

“No matter how short your sighting or conversation was, I would encourage you to please get in touch.”

He added: “Our activity today is trying to trace anyone who may have driven through this area last week, seen anything or captured any footage.

“While we have made an arrest in the case, we are continuing to appeal for anyone with any information, whether you know Kamil, have knowledge of his whereabouts or movements last week, or if you have any knowledge of the area where his body was found, to get in touch.

“No piece of information is too small. Our murder investigation is going through a painstaking process to establish what happened to Kamil and if you can help in any way, please get in touch.”

July 12th - the Northamptonshire man arrested is bailed.

July 21st - 2 more people arrested and bailed.

On Wednesday (July 21) officers from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Major Crime Unit (MCU) arrested a man in his 40s and a man in his 30s, both from the Northamptonshire area, in connection to the incident.

Det Supt Ian Simmons, from MCU, leading the investigation, said: “While we have made two further arrests in the case, we are continuing to appeal for anyone with any information to come forward.

“We are keen to speak to anyone who knew Kamil, had knowledge of his whereabouts in the lead up to July 1, or if you have any knowledge of the fields where his body was found.

One man has been released on bail and the second was released under investigation, as police enquiries continue.

I wish I could like this more than once. :) It's really helpful, thank you.

I agree, something like a regular dog walker may be what's narrowed the window for the witness appeal.

Interesting that they didn't announce a murder enquiry until 5 July. I'm guessing that must be the day the PM was done. Do we know the cause of death? It may have clarified that this was a murder rather than a suicide, say.

It can sometimes mean that the pathologist gave the police a bit of a kick up the pants, though. (I'm thinking for instance of Maria Rawlings, whose death was only treated as a murder after the PM found she'd been strangled, but who was found naked in bushes on a busy high road fgs, so it shouldn't really have needed the PM for her death to have been viewed as suspicious imo.)

Thank you! It wasn't until I gathered this all together that I really realised the time gap between finding Kamil and making any announcement. I cannot find anything before the 5th July and by then it was a murder enquiry.

There has been no information released on cause of death that I've found. I had thought they decided it was murder straight away, rather than suicide or misadventure, but it is clearer now that this took a few days.

The other thing I noticed while pulling the info together... The more recent arrests happened a week before it was reported. The first arrest was reported straight away. Unless the paper got the date wrong, but that said the 21st.

Around the time of the first arrest, there was police activity at another Wellingborough address that lasted about 5 days, from the day of arrest until 2 days after he was bailed. I am assuming this is related to the enquiry but the police officer I spoke to wouldn't confirm this. I did check the rules and think it's OK for me to add this observation.

Oh wow, well spotted. Which one of the previously arrested men is this, I wonder. The news report says he's 39 but I've lost track of what they said about who.

Now he's been named, we can sleuth him.

He seems to have a couple of different fb accounts (photos are clearly all the same man):

And, weirdly, a youtube channel with a load of videos of him singing (or lipsynching?) Polish pop songs:

How's your Polish, @AlwaysAsking? ;)

I wonder what the connection is, if any, between him and Kamil Leszczynski? I can't see him in any of LS's friends lists. LS seems to be from Jelenia Góra originally. Do we know where Kamil was from? But they both lived in Wellingborough, which seems to have a significant Polish community, so probably they knew each other from here.

Bedfordshire Police have tweeted this picture in the last hour, which gives a bit of a sense of what the place where Kamil's body was found looks like, and also what the forensic operation has involved.

I am guessing this is one of the second men arrested, as one was in their 30s. The other two were in their 40s. The address given for him is very close to mine!

Good find on the YouTube channel! I'll have to go and look but my Polish is almost non existent. I did find all the Facebook pages and he seems to have been an MMA fighter with a flyer on his wall for an event.

I didn't see any connections between him and Kamil, whose Facebook is in the name 'Kamil Kamil' but they may have friends in common. We have a substantial Polish and Eastern European community here. I'm not sure where in Poland Kamil is from but he seems to have family in Pyrzyce. I don't know if that's close.

OK, no, not near each other - Pyrzyce is in the north-west, Jelenia Góra in the south-west, about 160 miles apart.

upload_2021-8-3_1-16-35.jpeg

But if this is Kamil's - Log In or Sign Up to View - then they were friends, or at least acquaintances, as he's on the friends list for this one of the three profiles - Log In or Sign Up to View - so the connection is local and they must have lots of mutual contacts. I bet the Polish community is rocked by this.

If he's a MMA fighter, Kamil probably didn't stand a chance. :(

I wonder if the other people arrested will be charged, perhaps with attempting to pervert the course of justice if they helped to move Kamil's body, for instance. I'm going to speculate that the first person arrested was the owner of a vehicle that was seen in the area and traced through its registration number, and the subsequent two were the people the owner lent it to.

Oh wow how did I miss that? He doesn't show up when I check Kamil's friends but you're right, I can see him on one of the profiles. Yes that is the right profile for him, it's been tagged in posts by other friends but it doesn't show on his wall.

I am pretty sure I know who the first person arrested is and it's your theory about the vehicle is very interesting.

I see LS was in court this morning. Do you know what happens at a preliminary hearing?

Details: For Preliminary Hearing - Case Started - 10:02
For Preliminary Hearing - Hearing finished for LUKASZ STACHURA - 10:12
