(I’m seeing on twitter there has been a lot of ‘alleged sightings’ plus this is the sun so take it with a pinch of salt) ..

I got a fright there when I clicked the first link and watched the video, glanced away for a moment then a video of a fight in McDonalds started loudly playing! *Turns down volume*

It's good that people are reporting sightings but as you say... pinch of salt. Hope something pans out into a strong lead.

Not many updates today :(

This reminds me so much of Lachlan Simpson the lad that went missing from Dornoch a few years ago , especially the police pictures of his back pack, i can see this case also having a sad ending in some way. Jmo

I know from other cases I've followed on here that searching woodland is very difficult and it can be very easy to miss someone even in a small area, I'm sure the police will know that and do it thoroughly

the only thing in the police favour is that the woodlands in the area are exceptionally well maintained. they also have paths that cars or trucks can be driven up - making it easier to get search teams up to top of hills etc. The forests are not impossible types to search tho and they have had many offers of help from local gamekeepers farmers and ghillies. You are approaching highlands country and the area is filled with small forests - knowing what direction he went is key to going in the right forest.

the police have mentioned in various places that yes they are investigating every sighting and this one is one of many and in the view of many - not likely to be credible. How he would have got to this area from where he got off the bus would actually be quite complicated. sounds far fetched. a well to woman as the witness described this person is not likely to be travelling on a public bus service with a kid who has just run away. these so called sightings have very much hampered the police from searching in the right areas. highly irritating and quite upsetting as these delays could have cost liam his life.

what do you mean about the backpack? it looked relatively empty.

does anyone know liams birthday by any chance? there is a lot of info but not too much about him really. he was a great little football player when younger for sure.

i still think that the police were in the wrong area searching in banchory but time will tell. he got off near the slug road which is far more remote than the actual road to banchory.
it can be a lonely place in the dark and not too many houses.

As much as I think "sightings" have a 0.001% chance of being true people shouldn't ever be discouraged from reporting them. Most of the time it's cranks and attention seekers however very, very occasionally they can be real. I do hope the police prepare families to not put too much faith in them -especially when they don't make much sense.

If I was in charge of the police I'd kindly request people don't ever post their alleged sightings on social media as they then seem to grow arms and legs. People should just call the police and leave it.

The investigation of sightings in random areas of Scotland wouldn't take away from the main (and most important imo) search of the Crathes area. It's not like the mountain rescue searchers stand down just because someone saw a tall boy many miles away.

Dear @Ironside,

Great post!

The police do tell the public that even if a detail concerning a missing person seems small or not important - to report it anyway. It could end up being the clue that leads to answers.

My hope is that Liam is somewhere and is safe. I know I may be holding onto a thread of hope - but it's still hope.

The mother of teenager Liam Smith, a 16-year-old boy missing from Aberdeen, has spoken of the family's desperation for him to be found safe Mother's plea for missing teenager

BBC Scotland News on Twitter

Mother in plea over missing Aberdeen teenager Liam Smith

His mother Alix Smith said: "We are so worried about him and really anxious to find him and take him home."

She added: "It has now been three days since we last saw Liam and we are completely shocked and devastated by his disappearance.

"If Liam sees this message I don't want him to be concerned about being in any trouble. I just want to find him."

Mother's plea for missing teenager

There has been no mention of this behaviour being out of character for him (that i have seen).

What does worry me is that with all the publicity and searches out there it is a long time and that he hasn't contacted anyone and with all the searches he hasn't been found.

Is he the sort of kid that would put his family and friends through all this ... there has been nothing to indicate he could be that uncaring of the worry everyone has for him.

Have we heard anything about people seeing him on the bus that might have seen where he went after getting off the bus?
