Police statement
Detective Chief Inspector Phil Gadd said: “Throughout the investigation we reviewed a large number of offences, that individually had no correlation or evident link to have been committed by the same person, and identified the charged offences from our enquiries.

“Making a connection between them all was challenging, as there was no direct pattern of offending with varying time lapses between certain offences.

“However, we were able to comprehensively examine and collate information and put forward evidence to build a strong case against Relowicz and ensure he was brought before the courts.

“I would like to thank all those who have come forward and provided evidence as part of the case, as your cooperation and assistance has helped achieve this result.”

I wonder whether his wife is standing by him, or if she had enough and has left with the children. His poor mum is going to be gutted.
Does anyone know whether his wife and children are still in the U.K,or have they returned to Poland?

Does anyone else see potentially 3 scratch marks on PRs face in that mugshot?

Where? Under left eye - could be a scar? Right: a spot or such?

Do I remember - I think a rumour somewhere, maybe Hull Live comments at time - reading he did have scratches on face?

He pleaded guilty to three of the five burglary charges, didn't he. Which are the ones he denied?
I see that three of them don't mention anything sexually related.

Just thinking that at least one of the burglaries could be treated as an unrelated crime and attract a consecutive sentence. Maybe. I'm not an expert.

The charges in full

Seems to be a deep one under his eye. He looks to be a drinker, to me.

Just catching up now. Thanks to everyone who gave updates and explanations. I feel sick reading the details of his offences and I'm delighted with his sentence, the judge is a legend and we need more judges like that. I really hope that now this is dealt with something is going to happen to move Libby's case forward and her family can have her back.

Yes there was a rumour of scratches on face at arrest.

To me it looked like under left eye. Under right nostril and right side of face/cheek (possibly a mole).

Before I heard Judge Jez I thought he might get 2 years or so (and be out in a few months) but I'm hoping for longer. At the very least he's a nasty pervert who needs to be off our streets. However, I believe he was getting bolder, getting cocky, pushing boundaries... I honestly think he saw a chance to get his kicks from Libby by playing the good samaritan then trying to take things further.

Either she cut and run the minute he laid his grubby mitts on her and ended up in the river.
Or the screams were her being attacked, then she ran off and fell in the river.
Or he attacked and her and "accidentally" killed her to keep her quiet (smothered, strangled etc).
Or he's a cold blooded killer.

I'm somewhere between the middle options, still. I do think they were in that park and I do think the screams were Libby and it was him seen running down the path. Whether he was running because she had vanished into the darkness, or because he'd just thrown her body in the water, or he'd hidden her somewhere to deal with later... I don't know.
I really can't get the idea of her running off into a river.

The pictures I've seen of the park suggest it'd be a sort of uphill run. Frozen uneven ground. A bank. A tidal river. Bends a lot before she gets to the Humber. I can't see her falling far enough in to be carried away. The police were there very shortly after searching.

He's stocky she's drunk. IMO she'd struggle to get away from him.

His crimes suggest he's not put off easily.

I struggle with accidentally killing someone. How would you manage that?

8 and a half years is great. I wish we were stricter with all the crimes like this and worse.

Put your hand over their mouth and nose to stop them screaming / struggling.

I agree it's a stretch to accidentally run into the river. It's up and over a steep bank and the lights from buildings on the opposite side are reflected on the water (source: Strontium went there at night to check it out)

I got to the same section of @Winterbells' attachment as you did, @Cherwell. Apart from the nature of the crimes, the most damning feature for sentencing is the range of crimes, victims, locations and dates. Maybe the gravity of them is not great but there is now an admission that he has committed a range of different crimes. I wonder how many victim statements were tendered to the court! The judge surely has to take this into account when determining a fair and reasonable outcome. Consecutive sentencing could well be invoked. In 48 hrs we'll presumably know.[/QUOTE

So @Cherwell, on Wednesday we interpreted the Principle of Totality fairly accurately. It gave the judge the leverage to effectively give consecutive sentencing for the wide range of different offending. Earlier today when the judge described the series of offences as a "campaign", I guessed what was coming! Also when the full details of offending were read out in court their gravity was worse than realised. I still expect there'll be an appeal over the way the sentence was calculated.
Here's hoping that LE get truth and justice for Libby's family one day (soon?). It still seems that her disappearance led directly to LE catching him via his car registration. Strange that he didn't think to remove the incriminating articles from his car, assuming he knew LE's investigations would include the spidercam car, thought to belong to him.

That's not an accidental act.

A brilliant judge. Far longer than I expected. Could whatever was said under reporting restrictions have contributed in some way?

When his trial date was first set didn't they say there would be CCTV footage? We didn't get to hear about that.

Re any appeal - the judge is obviously experienced and will have justified it fully. So hopefully he won't be allowed to appeal.

But not intended to kill.
Manslaughter? Maybe not initially but it would take an amount of time where you'd surely realise what was happening. Time for you to stop

CPS issue statement
Pawel Relowicz preyed on his young female victims, violating their privacy at the most intimate level and committing a series of disgusting and disturbing acts of criminality over a period of 19 months.

The sentence imposed today is a measure of the gravity of his offending, and I hope that the young women he targeted take some measure of comfort from the knowledge that he is now behind bars.
