I think by Friday everything will be clear.

I think that's optimistic!

At the least, I'd expect the jury to go over all the evidence and there are 3 defendants and multiple charges so ... it may take us into next week.

A slow to deliver verdict isn't necessarily a bad thing, it doesn't necessarily mean they're struggling to agree, just making sure that the correct justice is served for Logan

'Without commentary'

The judge welcomes the jurors to court, and begins by telling them she won’t be going through all the evidence they have heard during the lengthy trial. Instead, she says, she will be summing up the evidence that they have already heard.

She reminds the jurors that which bits of evidence they regard as important, and what they make of the evidence, are matters for them and them alone. Mrs Justice Jefford adds that she will present her evidence in a "neutral" way without "commentary"

The judge reminds the jury about Logan and his mother Angharad Williamson’s background - she said Williamson moved to Wales from Essex, and soon met Ben Mwangi and in 2015 became pregnant with Logan. She says it was "not an easy pregnancy" and she developed seizures. After the breakdown of the relationship with Ben Mwangi she met and married a serviceman who subjected her to domestic abuse. When this relationship ended, Williamson was given a council flat onLower Llansantffraid. Then in March 2019 Williamson met and began to see John Cole, who was living with his partner in Sarn.

Friend's evidence: 'Logan made to do push ups when he was three or four'


The judge turns to the evidence of Jodie Simmonds, a friend of the defendants. In her evidence, Ms Simmonds said she recalled an incident at Christmas 2019 when Cole and Logan were in the boy’s room. She said Logan was in a push-up position and “[His arms] looked tired and they were shaking”. She said she later raised the issue with Cole and he just “shrugged it off” and then raised it with Williamson who told her Logan “needs to learn” because his behaviour had been poor.

Daniel O'Brien evidence: 'Cole didn't like Logan'

The judge reminds the jury about the evidence of Daniel O’Brien who had known John Cole since 2017 after meeting him in a gym. Mr O'Brien was known to Logan as “Uncle Dan”. This witness told the jury about an incident when Cole had told him that he didn’t like Logan.

The judge reminds the jury that Cole’s barrister, David Elias QC, had challenged the witness over this evidence, and had put it to him that he had made up the comment after he had Cole and fallen out because he had a grudge against him. The witness had insisted that Cole had said those words.

Williamson's close friend's evidence: 'Slightly strict parenting'
The judge reminds the jury about Rhiannon Hales, a close friend of the defendant Williamson. This witness described Logan as "a playful little boy" and a "mummy's boy" who loved his mother. Asked about the parenting style of Williamson and Cole she had said they were "slightly on the strict side" but there was "nothing to suggest anything other than a strict parent".

Miss Hales also told the jury about an occasion when Cole had told her he loved Williamson, and could continue to love her "without Logan".

Youth defendant's foster family evidence: 'Youth picked up dog by its back legs'

The judge is now reminding the jury about evidence relating to the youth defendant - because of his age, he cannot be named - which was in the form of written statements from a foster family who cared for him. In the statement the foster mother described the youth as having a "desire for violence" who was always "sparring" with himself and with anyone who came to the house "as if to prove he was bigger and better" than anyone else, something which could be intimidating to visitors. She also said on one occasion the youth grabbed the family dog - which had an injured pelvis - by the back legs and picked it up, and on another occasion was seen squirting deodorant into the dog’s eyes

The judge also describes how on occasion he tried to get her to play down by the river on her own but she was scared by this and did not go, and how he also tried to get her young nieces to play a "murder game" and put them in black bags.

The witness describes how one day he slashed a paddling pool with a knife, and how he told her that when the new Purge film came out he was going to kill her parents.

The judge reminds the jury that a social worker dealing with the youth had a "different view" of some of these incidents, and attributed some of the issues to "problems in the foster family".
