Does this sort of thing in our UK press annoy anyone else?

By all means put up a warning, but I'm an adult. I can make my own decisions on whether I can take reading something that's graphic!

It would be great if it was like in the States where they can show video from the court as with UK cases you miss so much and it's hard sometimes to piece together what's actually being said/happening.
Yes it does annoy me. (A lot!)

Everything about this case appears staged for some reason. Gloves peeping out of the pocket, waiting to be found and tested.

I hope we get thorough reporting of the summing up.

What puzzles me more than all the DNA evidence on the different clothes is why the prosecution called the witness (SB?) to testify it was his hoody years ago. What does that even matter?

And how did they even find this guy? Was there still dna of him on the hoody after all this time (unlikely) and they were able to identify him that way?

And should it not have been the defence calling this witness as a way of pointing at yet another possible perpetrator on scene?

Perhaps SN said it was not his hoody - and stated that it belonged to SB

Yes, very much so. A warning would suffice - we are all adults and can make our own minds up as to what we read.

10:16am

The trial of Stephen Nicholson, 25, of no fixed address, continues today (Tuesday, July 9).

He is accused of murdering Southampton schoolgirl Lucy McHugh, whose body was found in a wooded area of Southampton Sports Centre in July last year. Nicholson denies murder.

He also denies two allegations of sexual activity with a child against Lucy on multiple occasions and denies sexual activity with a child in relation to another girl aged 14.

10:17am

The trial is set to continue this morning, with proceedings expected to get under way within the next 20 minutes or so.

10:19am

Yesterday, Winchester Crown Court heard DNA linked to ‘murdered’ schoolgirl Lucy McHugh and her alleged killer -Stephen Nicholson - was found on blood-stained clothing dumped beside a Southampton river.

It comes after Lucy’s body was found in a wooded area of Southampton Sports Centre on July 26, last year.

10:28am

Members of the press and barristers are beginning to make their way into the Winchester court room, and the public gallery is filling up.

10:41am

Judge The Honourable Mrs Justice May DBE and the jury are now in court, and Nicholson is in the dock.

The first witness, a former partner of Nicholson, has been sworn in and is beginning to give evidence.

10:44am

While being questioned by prosecution barrister William Mousley QC, she told members of the jury Nicholson had an intimate piercing, which she described.

10:54am

Defence barrister James Newton-Price QC is now going over conversations between Nicholson and the witness in the week of Lucy’s death.

10:57am

The witness confirmed Nicholson told her about Lucy being found dead, saying he had the information from Lucy’s mum, Stacey White.

11:00am

She said Nicholson had been worried as a tattooed man on a bike had been seen with Lucy, and he had told her he was worried about his DNA being on Lucy's clothes as he used to wash them.

The witness added Nicholson had complained about Lucy's behaviour, telling her that Lucy would steal things from him.

11:04am

The next witness has been sworn in and is giving evidence.

She says she met Nicholson when she was looking to get a tattoo in June 2012.

11:07am

The witness says she was 14 at the time.

She then told the court she had had sex with Nicholson, also when she was 14, in a wooded area of Southampton Sports Centre.

11:09am

The witness said he messaged her asking if she wanted to meet up for sex.

She said she agreed.

11:17am

The witness said she got a taxi to an address where she met Nicholson. She thought they were going to have sex there, but a friend of Nicholson's turned up.

They then walked to the sports centre.

11:19am

She said: “I assumed we weren’t going to have sex anymore.

“He asked if I still wanted to have sex and I said no because we were outside, and I wasn’t comfortable with that.

“He kept persisting.”

11:20am

She added: “He said he could take me up to the wooded area.”

11:22am

The witness then went on to say the had sex.

The walked back towards Dunkirk Road and said there was a "really awkward silence".

11:27am

The witness said she talked to him about the tattoo in the afternoon, which she then got with a friend.

11:29am

She said her mum found out about the tattoo and the police got involved. She said she told the police who did the tattoo but didn't say anything about what happened in the woods.

She didn’t want to get in trouble and said she didn’t want to get Nicholson in trouble “for the choice I had made”.

11:49am

Defence barrister James Newton-Price QC is now cross examining the witness. He says the witness never went to the address on her own and never had sex with Nicholson.

The witness said she did, with Mr Newton-Price questioning some of the details of her recollection.

11:52am

Mr Newton-Price questioned why she was not willing to turn up at a stranger’s house for a tattoo without speaking to him, but was willing to go to an address she had never been to before and have sex with a man she had never met before.

The witness said: "I was 14, I was stupid."

2:24pm

She was having a tattoo done on her thigh. However, she said it made her feel uncomfortable when he put his hands on her thigh. She said he was “a bit touchy feely”.

She said after the tattoo, while waiting for her mum, Nicholson tried to kiss her.

2:29pm

She said she spoke with Nicholson on social media after that. She told members of the jury the content was "just general chat and then flirty messages".

Later she then sent pictures in her underwear to Nicholson, she said.

2:50pm

The witness was then cross examined by defence barrister James Newton-Price QC.

The court heard she went on to have six tattoos done by Nicholson.

2:52pm

Mr Newton-Price suggested Nicholson had to touch her thigh as part of doing the tattoo properly.

2:53pm

He suggested the witness's mum was present the whole time and the kissing incident never happened.

The witness said it did happen.
