During today's 30-minute hearing at Liverpool Crown Court, Mr Justice Julian Goose ruled that both indictments should be joined together and Rudakubana face a single trial, to take place from January 20 and last four to six weeks.

The defendant, who watched by videolink from Belmarsh Prison, South East London, was twice asked to confirm his name but refused to reply and sat in his grey prison tracksuit with the sweatshirt pulled over his mouth and nose.

A prison officer confirmed he could hear proceedings and defence barrister Stan Reiz, KC, confirmed his identity.

Prosecutor Deanna Heer, KC, said: 'He's (Rudakubana) taken the same position at every opportunity.'

He will be asked to enter pleas during a further hearing on December 12.

Thinking ahead to what might happen at the trial, if he refuses to enter a plea, I believe that the court will enter a 'not guilty' plea on his behalf.

An interesting coincidence that the next meeting of the World Economic Forum begins on January 20th, 2025, which is where the PM will be at the time of Rudakubana's trial, which given the public disquiet over the political management of this tragedy and the aftermath may not be a good look for him. I really hope that we can get some more transparency over this case and that it does get to trial and justice is done and seen to be done for all involved.

I doubt this rumour has any substance, Starmer is an unlucky PM but that would take the biscuit. My worry is that this case gets pushed down the track, maybe to be announced just before Christmas, thereby extending the perfectly proper press gag on information. Trust in the system needs restoring and fast.

It is true that No.10 have debunked the rumour, but if you read their answer, it only debunks part of the rumour. I dont think that the matter is going to be dismissed so easily.

Teacher fights for life after shielding children in Southport killings

Leanne Lucas, 35, was critically injured after she leapt in to try to protect innocent youngsters when a knifeman went on a rampage on July 29, killing three schoolgirls.

The teacher was quickly hailed as a hero after reports emerged that she used her body as a shield to protect a number of children.

Axel Rudakubana's next court appearance in relation to the Southport stabbings, set for today, has been postponed. The 18-year-old, of Banks in West Lancashire, had been set to face a plea hearing at Liverpool Crown Court this morning, Thursday, December 12.

Rudakubana has so far made four court appearances before Liverpool Magistrates' Court, Liverpool Crown Court and Westminster Magistrates' Court. He has not spoken to confirm his identity during any of these hearings.

His case was initially listed to take place before Mr Justice Goose from 10am today, with the defendant due to appear via video link from Belmarsh prison. However, the ECHO understands that the hearing will now instead take place on a date next week.

I am so nervous about today, that Rudakubana's lawyers are going to try for a plea of diminished responsibility, and that the parents are going to be left in the same agony as the relatives of the Nottingham stabbings.
I'm not a legal person so I don't know all the processes in these situations but the signs look ominous to me. In such cases we need much more transparency and juries not judges should determine whether there is any evidence/justification for this type of defence within the public trial.

Southport stabbings suspect to appear in court today​

Good morning from Liverpool Crown Court.

We’re just waiting to be admitted to courtroom 41 at the moment, with the case listed to begin from 10.30am.

It is expected that there will be a large media presence today, with the adjacent courtroom 42 being used as an overflow court where proceedings will be screened via video link.

Rudakubana, represented by Stan Reiz KC, has so far made four court appearances before Liverpool Magistrates' Court, Liverpool Crown Court and Westminster Magistrates' Court. He has not spoken to confirm his identity during any of these hearings and has sat with his prison-issue jumper pulled over the bottom of his face.
