“Officers recovered 3,500 WhatsApp messages between the pair that "quickly" changed from being "largely innocent to overwhelmingly sexual", it was said.

Jurors were told how McCullum became "increasingly distorted and unpleasant" in the texts and spoke of sexual fetishes where he wanted Megan to call him "Lord Commander".”

Sorry to keep posting so much but all the information appears to be fragmented across so many articles, this other one goes into great detail.

don’t apologise, it is very much appreciated….

I had forgotten about this case, with it being put back so many times, so it’s good to be able to catch up here, many thanks to you and everyone else who has posted details.

Is anyone doing live updates from the trial? Strange how no one seems to be covering it

The court heard he had 'quite an interest' in Sutcliffe and also looked up the Manchester Arena bombing.

The court heard messages he sent to Megan's phone included 'Morning Baby', 'Are you up yet?', and 'Please just let me know you're ok'.

He went on to say, 'Babe I'm getting worried, you didn't message or call me last night or today. Please respond because I'm getting really worried about you', and 'Are you ok or maybe I have done something wrong?'

Mr Cammegh said the 'contrived' messages in which McCullum 'feigned concern' were designed to provide him with a false alibi, should Megan's phone ever be recovered.

But yesterday jurors at Leicester Crown Court heard that while Megan's family and friends began to panic over her disappearance, McCullum was browsing the internet searching for domination 🤬🤬🤬🤬 and information on notorious killers.

He even searched 'Who cuts your hair in prison and how do you pay?' on Google.

Not yet, it seems. Maybe because it’s just the opening statements at the moment? The trial is supposed to last 7 weeks. It’s also strange that there are no proper pictures of him. We have only just gotten court sketches.

Slightly more detail in this article from today;

Continuing his opening speech to the jury on Thursday, prosecutor John Cammegh KC said McCullum took a taxi back to Coalville, arriving home at about 10.45pm.
Mr Cammegh said McCullum then texted Miss Newborough’s phone with a messages reading “Did you get back alright baby” and “I guessing you’ve gone bed or your phone has died so I’ll talk to you in the morning and then we can go round yours.”

At 11.18pm, the court heard, McCullum Googled “How to tell a girl you love her” and nine minutes later left a voicemail for Miss Newborough in which he said he was worried about her and loved her.
After playing the “self-serving” voicemail to the jury, Mr Cammegh added: “For what reason was that sent other than to create a false alibi?

Megan Newborough: Man googled serial killers after murder, jury told

The court heard Mr McCullum admitted strangling Ms Newborough in his living room during police interviews.
Mr Cammegh said Mr McCullum had told officers he had "lost control" during a sex act.

Mr Cammegh said: "According to the defendant everything had suddenly 'gone crazy in (his) head'."
He added: "There was no evidence of sexual assault, but there was evidence of bruising to her jaw. It was likely she put up a fight."
After the prosecution opened the case, Kerim Fuad KC, defending, addressed the jury.
He said his client was suffering PTSD when he strangled Ms Newborough as a result of sexual abuse he had suffered as a child.”

On July 15, McCullum had hinted there was another side to his personality.

”When you get to know me more you will see haha, I have my moments when I can be a nice and caring guy too.”

In another exchange on July 19, Ms Newborough had asked him: “What are your quirks, then?”

Mr McCullum replied: “I cannot give them all away just yet, missy, you would run for the hills if you heard all of them at once.

I really hope they don’t let him off with a manslaughter sentence. He’s definitely highly culpable and tried to cover up the murder.
Also does anyone find it strange how there’s no pictures of McCullam? Not even court drawings…
I did wonder about this twitter profile, last used in 2019 (hope that this is allowed?)

The different spelling of his surname in articles is driving me nuts.

I presume he doesn't have any form of social media or we would have a picture of him.

Would help if like i said before that the surname was consistent. Can anyone access to lawpages to check? O/T but I'm a McCallum myself, I always thought folks wanted spelling clarification of the Mc/Mac part, apparently not.

Megan's car was found in the carpark of Loughborough College - items of McCullum's blood-stained clothing were discovered in nearby bins.

John Newborough ( brother of Megan ) remembers her being "completely normal" and "in happy spirits" when she left the house at about 7.30pm on Friday, August 6, to "go for a walk with a friend".

Using Megan's log in details to access the Find My Phone app on iCloud, they found the phone was emitting a signal in countryside near Hermitage Road, in Whitwick...............

Jurors heard from two colleagues who had worked with McCullum and Miss Newborough ......

Lucy Weighall -
after mentioning that she thought the pair got on well to Miss Newborough afterwards, the victim replied: 'He's nice but not really the type I would date or take home to my parents.

'He's a bit rough around the edges.'

Bethany Gunn
said Miss Newborough's relationship with McCullum seemed 'quite a casual one' and said 'she seemed quite happy with how things were going, seeing how it developed'.

Thank goodness her phone had a 'find my phone' app on it and her brother knew her log in details
