Officers are appealing for help tracing a missing hillwalker who has not returned from a planned route in Glencoe.

Neil Gillingham, 43, from Kilmarnock was last seen around 1.30pm on Sunday, 6 March near the summit of Stob Coire Nam Beith.

He had planned to walk a route from the Hidden Valley car park to Bidean Nam Bian and Stob Coire Nam Beith before descending to the Lost Valley.

Searches are ongoing in the area with the assistance of the Glencoe, Lochaber, Oban, RAF and Police Scotland mountain rescue teams and the HM Coastguard helicopter.

Neil is described as 5ft 8in tall, of stocky build with receding fair hair and blue eyes.

He was wearing a blue Rab waterproof jacket, black thermal trousers and brown walking boots. He was walking with his black and white springer spaniel dog.

Sergeant Leigh Brown of Fort William Police Station said: “Neil did not return as planned from a walk in Glencoe and extensive search activity is now ongoing to locate him.

“I would urge anyone who believes they may have seen or spoken to him at any time since he was last seen near the top of Stob Coire Nam Beith on Sunday afternoon to get in touch urgently.

“Anyone with information can call 101, quoting reference 3012 of 6 March, 2022.”

A man and his dog are missing after going hillwalking in Glencoe.

He was with his black and white springer spaniel.

The 43-year-old, who was walking with his black and white springer spaniel dog had set out to take a route from the Hidden Valley car park to Bidean nam Bian and Stob Coire nam Beith before descending to the Lost Valley.

Searches are currently taking place in the area with members of the Glencoe, Lochaber, Oban, RAF and Police Scotland mountain rescue teams all involved, as well as the HM Coastguard helicopter.

A missing hillwalker's dog has been found as the search for him remains ongoing in the Highlands.

Neil Gillingham was last seen with his black and white springer spaniel Cooper around 1.30pm on Sunday near the summit of Stob Coire Nam Beith, south of Glencoe.

Posting an update online, a family member confirmed that Cooper had been traced but there was still no sign of Neil.

Police have confirmed that the dog was found safe and well on Monday, however there have been no sightings of Mr Gillingham.

Searches have taked place in the area with members of the Glencoe, Lochaber, Oban, RAF and Police Scotland mountain rescue teams all involved, as well as the HM Coastguard helicopter.

The multi-agency operation was called off on Wednesday evening for the hiker who was last seen near the top of Stob Coire Nam Beith around 1.30pm on Sunday, March 6.

The search is due to continue in the Glencoe area on Thursday after it was halted due to bad weather, and poor visibility.

Mr Gillingham’s black and white springer spaniel was found on Monday. But in spite of days of searching with the support of the RAF and the Coastguard helicopter, he has not been traced.

The 43-year-old, who is from Kilmarnock, is described as 5ft 8in tall, with receding fair hair and wearing blue jacket, black trousers and walking boots.

Six people have died in the last two weeks on Scottish mountains.

We can confirm that a body recovered on Stob Coire Sgreamhach in Glencoe has been identified as missing hill walker Neil Gillingham.

Neil’s family have been made aware and are being supported by officers. They have asked for privacy.

The death is not being treated as suspicious and, as with all sudden deaths, a report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal.

Sergeant Keith Almond said: “Our thoughts are with Neil’s family at what is a very difficult time for them.

"Officers would like to pass on their thanks to the mountain rescue teams, HM Coastguard helicopter crews and members of the public who assisted with the searches.

“We would also like to thank all those who shared and responded to our appeal.”
