Emergency services searching for a man missing for more than 24 hours have issued an update and fresh appeal.

Nicholas Degraff was reported missing at around 12.40pm on Sunday (December 12).

Cumbria Police said the 23-year-old left an address in Great Clifton at around 4:30am intending to walk home to Workington but did not arrive.

He was last seen on Rosemary Gardens, Great Clifton at around 5am heading westwards towards Workington.

Nicholas is described as 5ft 10ins tall, of slim build and with short, brown-coloured hair. He has tattoos on his face and neck with spacer ear piercings.

He was last seen wearing a black jacket, black jogging bottoms, work boots and carrying a grey-coloured drawstring shoulder bag. He also had an Alsatian dog with him and had in his possession a “3M SPEED GLAS” black welding mask - likely carried in a bag - which would be quite distinctive if found.

Multi-agency searches are currently ongoing in Great Clifton area and along the River Derwent and a coastguard helicopter was spotted over Workington yesterday afternoon.

It appears the dog was found yesterday at Camerton in a distressed state. Seems by water, which may indicate its owner had come to some harm. Dog is safe and being taken care of.

This sounds very worrisome. Could his adorable dog have jumped for a swim and Nicholas tried to save her…?

Loads of comments on Facebook. He’s very loved by many people.

This doesn't sound good, good chance he ended up in the river.

How wide/deep/fast flowing is the Derwent? Could it carry a body to the port?

How far was the walk to his intended destination?

How far was the walk to his intended destination?

I don't know exactly where in Workington Nicholas lives, but it is pretty much exactly three miles between the house he left and Workington town centre. That assumes taking the direct route westwards along the minor road that goes through Stainburn. This is the obvious route to have taken, and the last sighting of him suggests that that is what he intended to do.

However, I have seen it reported that his dog was found in a distressed state on the river bank at Camerton, about half a mile north of house he left, which suggests he has taken a rather indirect route home.

About an hour from great Clifton to Workington. It is possible to do the walk mostly by the river but not 100%. You probably would use the road at Camerton as the river bends but Nicholas could of just tried to follow the river as his dog was found at Camerton. To my knowledge the welders mask hasn’t been found and this would stick out and likely float in the water.

Could he have gone in the water at another point, and dog just followed him as he was dragged along, hence being found at Camerton? Is it a fast current in the water in that area, or what was it like that night?

I live by a stream and most times just less than a foot high so the ducks even have to walk rather than swim!, and very calm. But at others and in bad weather it rises up to 10ft and races along at a pace, dragging everything with it.
