"Neighbour tells court he thought
'a one year old shouldn't cry that much',
Michael Nuttall also lived next door.
He said Jay was quieter than John.

He noticed Preston cried a lot at the house.
He thought a one year old shouldn’t cry that much
but he thought it was teething problems and
he didn’t want to be an interfering neighbour.

He said the crying was ‘high pitched’.
He heard John going upstairs and using a raised voice,
saying ‘come on now’."

Audio of the 999 call where Varley can be heard telling McGowan to 'put it down' has been released.

Some chat logs of messages between Varley and a friend have also been released.

My opinions only-- One text claimed that the foster parents didn't mention sleep difficulties, but that seems hard to believe.

He wrote Preston screamed a lot, but with the abuse and lack of patience, Preston was probably in pain often.

OT -- but I have known babies that needed special very expensive formula because they were sensitive to any milk-based or soy-based formulas. I wonder if Preston also had something like that, or something else health-wise that caused him discomfort and kept him from sleeping for very long.

They did. If I remember correctly he was first admitted to hospital in the April. The month he went to live with them. A previously healthy little boy.

I fully believe the intention was there all along.

I guess
the defendant being a teacher
was an advantage to obtain consent for adoption.

After all,
being a teacher means possessing empathy, warmth and patience.
Not to mention the professional knowledge of child's psychology.
(At least in my country)

This profession is highly regarded by Society.

As a teacher myself
I see this case as a betrayal of this profession.
Betrayal of Trust.

What a Shame!!!

At least
he is now described as a FORMER teacher.

Yes I imagine him being a teacher was a positive when they applied to adopt.
On paper he probably seemed an ideal candidate.

In reality he was a pedophile with access to children on a daily basis.
An absolute betrayal of trust and thank God he will never ever legally be allowed near another child again!

I cannot understand these people. And at least one of them a professional, in a position of trust and responsibility! Wtaf.

Personally I wish they weren't anywhere. This planet could use a whole lot less people, IMO, and I'd start with these sorts.

It certainly is a highly regarded and respected profession. I would love to get a look at his work history to see if it ever raised any red flags prior to Preston coming to live there. JMO

I think it’s a really good thing that we CAN’T understand these people.

I suppose
being in "a position of trust and responsibility"
might count as an aggravating factor
IF found guilty.

We must remember the trial is STILL in process.

If he is found guilty I think it will be an aggravating factor.

The evidence is so damning already, he is guilty in my eyes. Moo of course.
