Up here I suppose the equivalent would be lad. Even though it means boy you could say "he's a nice lad" about a young adult male.

All over the place today and struggling to keep on track. Aside from JI (who I am very disappointed in, though I still think he didn't know what was going on) and DD is anyone else expected to take the stand today?

Ah true that might be a good comparison , although we'd use lad for a wider age group ,e g we'd also use it for lads night out , same as girls night out, even though we're talking about adults.

It sounds like something an older person might use to describe someone younger - is that right? So JI might use it if he was talking about Becky. Would it be the kind of terminology that JI (23 year old) would use if he was referring to NM (28 year old) though?

My relative is early 20's and was referring to other lads around his age group when he used it. I questioned him at the time because I thought he was talking about little ones, which was silly of me because he was talking about modified cars at the time :/

I was just about to say the same thing, 'kiddie' to me would be a small child, aged about 1-7. Regional terms and dialect in the UK can really vary though, always found it quite fascinating. My nanna was born in Leeds and some of her siblings stayed in the area whilst my nanna moved to York. Not too far in distance but the accents were HUGELY different. When I was a 'kiddie' I would ask for some 'sweets' (candy, chocolate) and my cousins would call them 'spice'!

Think you're right about the sofa question. i.e JP & DD weren't at BC when the stuff was unloaded into the kitchen according to JI

He told the court he had to make two trips “tops” to transfer all the items from the van to the kitchen of the Barton Court home.

ETA Mind you, yesterday JI said he only went into the hallway at CML and only into the kitchen at BC so where the "sofa" comes into it is beyond me!

We don't really have an equivalent to describe a teen or young man. Maybe youth I suppose but more likely just to say teenager or young bloke. I wonder if the judge and pros are aware of what "kiddie" means in Bristol. Before knowing the slang I'd have asumed the snapchat "is this the kiddies house" was asking if it was a little kids house, at a stretch Becky's house but I'd never have thought it could have meant NM's house.

Prosecution and at least one of the Defence Barristers work out of Bristol, so hopefully they have heard the term. If not, I hope they queried it with one of their staff who could explain it to them - as it could make a difference.

I would say it's more common for the older generation to say it. However I have heard people when in their twenties use it to describe another male in their twenties. It's not necessarily a derogatory term, but usually it's just used when you don't really know the persons name.


I would say that Lad would be a good substitute word for Kiddie.

I didn't find the moped explanation particularly suspicious either. If there was somebody interested in buying it and had offered to pay for it "tomorrow", then surely that can be proved by looking at previous text messages or a statement from the person concerned.

DD is the only one who seems to be sounding like someone totally innocent, and with the humanity to actually think beyond his own circumstances and relate to what the family are going through.

There is quite a difference in dialect between south and north Bristol, even though we are only separated by a few miles and a river!

My husbands family (North Bristol) and my family (South Bristol) use different words for the same thing - it can get very confusing!

I think he's referring to the whole situation. The murder and the aftermath. He may be venting some anger at the man in front of him who started this. Imagine having to stand next to a monster like NM for weeks and being unable to say a word to them about what you think of them.

The way I understood it was DD questioning why his brother would do something as stupid as take a large sum of money to store/hide something for someone, without even knowing what he was storing (and perhaps even who else was involved). The position that you could find yourself in could be dangerous if it involved a drugs gang/war, or even the person the stolen goods came from finding out you had them.

This phrase:

I think he means he is horrified that his brother had unwittingly got himself in that position.

If you change the words "Becky's body parts" and use "stolen goods" or "drugs", then the sentence reads very differently. If they are to be believed, it was drugs or stolen goods they were storing..... so yes, DD would think that it was a stupid position to put yourself in. Its only later that we found it was Becky's body. Of course DD will say he wouldn't have helped moved them. I imagine the others would have said the same, had NM told them exactly what was in those suitcases.

I am agreeing with most people on here DD is innocent how strange is it you can sort of feel the vibe he's innocent by the words he's used I can almost feel the emotion in them something I have not felt with anyone else in this case NM,SH even JI all feels false and rehearsed just mo.
