I wonder if Pacteau's sentence was because it wasn't pre-planned? I think it was an opportunist murder (not that it's any comfort to KB's poor family). Also KB was over 18.

I think they agreed that although it wasn't preplanned to kill Karen, he had gone out intending to do something to someone. The thought of him being free at any point is horrifying.

If Matthews had pleaded guilty to murder, Becky's family could have been spared the gruesome trial. But no. He had to come up with this ludicrous tale of doing something 'extreme' to get a 'good' result (an 'accident') as if anyone in the entire universe would think that was reasonable justification. He was too much of a coward to tell the truth, so instead he spun a yarn so absurd that no one is really the wiser about what happened.

In legal discussion, The Hon. Mr Justice Dingemans says Nathan Matthews' explanation of kidnapping Becky to teach her respect was "absurd".

Not just of taking her to a tree and shouting at her in a deep voice, but then telling her to shut her eyes and running off quickly before she could see it was him. What an idiot for thinking any of that is remotely believable.

He was found not guilty of an earlier case of attempted rape, where part of his defence was that he was gay.

I don't know. I think his family might eventually find it easier to move on if he isn't around. I think that DG and AG's marriage will be put under huge strain if she does visit him in prison. I can't imagine the split loyalties that poor woman is going to face.

This wasn't considered in the case of Karen Buckley. Her body was similarly destroyed after her murder but he only got 30 years. I never understood how Packau (sorry if spelt wrong, but he isn't worth 30 seconds of my time to google his name) didn't get a full life term, as he will still be a danger when released.

I think it's worth mentioning here, for the benefit of non-UK posters, that there are separate legal systems in the UK. There is no such thing as "UK law".

While I don't know if it makes any difference to the point you raise, Pacteau was tried and sentenced under Scottish law, while Becky's case falls under the law of England & Wales.

Mine too. He is on suicide watch already, but sometimes the 15 minutes between keeping an eye is all it needs for it to happen.

If the only thing which makes him eventually tell the truth, is what is in it for him, then I hope he stays locked up for the rest of his life.

Whatever he has to say is probably so horrific, it probably won't bring them any peace anyway.

I doubt he will ever tell the truth..

I am sure he has repeated his version of the story to himself so often that he now believes his own lie.
