I don't know. I think his family might eventually find it easier to move on if he isn't around. I think that DG and AG's marriage will be put under huge strain if she does visit him in prison. I can't imagine the split loyalties that poor woman is going to face.

But I'd like him to have at least a few years of prison before that [emoji53]

If Matthews had pleaded guilty to murder, Becky's family could have been spared the gruesome trial. But no. He had to come up with this ludicrous tale of doing something 'extreme' to get a 'good' result (an 'accident') as if anyone in the entire universe would think that was reasonable justification. He was too much of a coward to tell the truth, so instead he spun a yarn so absurd that no one is really the wiser about what happened.

well said - that is an aggravating factor and caused so much more strife to build between the two families I guess too. That he lied for others to prevent the course of justice for SH is another to add to the list....

[h=3]'He has thrown away his life'[/h]Mr Vaitilingam said: “There is no mitigation for this appalling crime but I would invite my lord to be careful of saying there is no evidence of remorse.
“There is no atonement for a crime of this nature.”
Judge: “Well he had the option of pleading guilty.”
Mr Vaitilingam said as soon as Matthews was arrested for murder by the police he collapsed.
He said: “You have seen evidence of shame and anguish in the witness box. It’s wrong not to at least acknowledge that they exist.
“He has thrown away his life and his relationship with his mother who he loved and those things should not simply be airbrushed from history.”

Struggling to see his barristers point.

He seems to be arguing for leniency because nobody knows what happened, apart from his client and his girlfriend.

Um, NM chose to lie.

So suffer the consequences.

And?? HOW is that a reason to give him a more lenient sentence?

Well tough, he shouldn't have killed Becky then. He bought it on all himself. No sympathy from me. I think his barrister has got a nerve even asking anyone to take Nathan's situation into consideration.

Yet no apology. Sorry is the word he needed to say.

I like this Judge. No wonder he got a Knighthood, he is very, very good.

Not just to Becky's family either, but to JI and DD whose lives have been turned upside down by dragging them into the crime too. And, even for JP and KD - who would never have become involved had he not sought them out.

I'm even going to give SH a little bit of slack here, and suggest that had he kept his distance when she was 14 and he was 21, she 'might' have followed a different path.

Difficult one for NMs Barrister.

As soon as he was arrested for murder, he collapsed.

But not sufficiently to say, let's not have a trial
