UK - Storm Eunice - February 2022

Ughhh yesterday was already so windy in Bristol! At least it seemed like it, and the poor dog downstairs kept barking at the wind lol I’m on top of a hill so it’s very noticeable.

Our bedroom window is broken too and won’t be fixed till summer. It’s a big sash window with no lock, barely holding in place with foam stuffed all around. We put more foam in yesterday so it wouldn’t rattle but still. I’m worried it’s going to break, is that even possible?

So sorry to hear this. Wishing all our pals in the UK are ok and can recover after the storm.

In the US during preparations for hurricanes, people put sheets of plywood over the outside of windows. Probably too late, but you can always try it from the inside. It will make it dark inside, but hopefully you still have electricity and can keep lights on during the day.

Hey, check this out. They have different suggestions. Lowes is a big national chain of hardware stores in the US, so pretty reputable on advice.

There are some simple things people can do to prepare before the storm hits.

  • Make sure to charge all laptops and mobile phones to 100% before tonight
  • Check torches have batteries
  • Move cars away from trees and park in garage if possible
  • Secure garden furniture and move away from buildings
  • Firmly close doors and windows
  • Close and secure loft trapdoors with bolts
  • If chimney stacks are tall and in poor condition, make sure any beds are kept away from the areas directly beneath them

Storm Eunice: here are 5 tips to help storm-proof your home (msn.com)
''5 tips to help storm-proof your home

1 Secure any possessions outside of the property
Objects such as trampolines and garden furniture often get swept away by strong winds during a storm and have the ability to cause serious damage to buildings and people.

Where possible move objects like these into garages and sheds or use ropes and heavy objects to weigh them down.

2 Check your gutters regularly
Gutters are often forgotten about and can soon be built up with dirt and other debris.

When heavy rain sets in, the gutters help the water travel to drains but if the gutters are blocked, the water can overflow and cause damage to the inside of your property, causing leaks and interior wall damage.

3 Move your vehicle to an open space
Cars and other vehicles often fall victim to adverse weather, especially when strong winds rip down trees.

If your car is usually parked by a tree or another large object, then it’s best to move the vehicle to an open area, such as the pavement or nearby car park.

This will reduce the chances of any potential damage caused by falling objects.

4 Close gates and external pathways
Strong winds can often cause garden gates to fly open and if they’re made from a more fragile material such as wood, then it’s highly likely damage will be caused.

Make sure all gates are shut and pathways are closed off, as this will help protect not only the gate, but any possessions protected by it.

5 Protect your roof
During a storm a roof is one of the most common areas of the home to be damaged and one of the most costly to repair.

Ahead of a storm arriving, check the condition of your roof and remove any loose tiles and have any existing damage replaced as soon as possible, as this can prevent more severe disruption being caused.

We are in the red area, along the River Severn in Gloucestershire.
All our schools locally have announced they are closed tomorrow.
We've packed up the garden furniture and toys into the garage.
I'm feeling a little anxious about my drive to work in the morning! Let's hope it passes quickly without much damage.
Stay safe everyone x

Hopefully you will get to stay home or go in later when the storm subsides and it is safe to travel, take care!

I’m in Somerset and I’m feeling very anxious. We’ve secured or put away everything in the garden, but I’m more worried about flying debris from gardens around us where people haven’t bothered.

There is no public transport, all schools are shut, refuse and recycling collections are suspended. DH and DS are still expected to go to work so I’ll be panicking till they get there. DD’s partner is a builder and his site has been closed thank goodness so that’s one fewer worry.

I’ve just seen that London now has a red warning, so that means rural communities will now be forgotten as usual.

Oh wow, that's a huge area of England under red warnings now. Still Amber where I am.

I am really worried there might be a lot of damage in those Red Zones :( Just want everyone to be safe.

Thank you.
Unfortunately not, I work within the NHS and we have a full clinic of Patients today, although I'm not sure how many will venture out to see us.
